The opening of our Christmas concert is formed by Smetana's famous symphonic poem "The Moldau". The music almost vividly paints the course of the river - from its bubbling source to its full width as it flows into the Elbe. One can hear nature, rushing forests, and even a wedding in the countryside. A tribute to Smetana's Bohemian homeland, which is so close to us. Hummel's Trumpet Concerto in E major is a sparkling highlight. With virtuosic runs and radiant melodies, it showcases the trumpet at its best. Playing it for us is Lucienne Renaudin Vary, a master on her instrument! In Dvořák's Symphony No. 5, Czech folk music and romantic orchestral colors come together to create a music that touches the heart and soul. From idyllic sounds to captivating drama, the Bohemian master of melodies takes us on an evocative musical journey.

The last chamber music concert of 2025 will be full of folk rhythms, especially at the very end, thanks to Nikolai Kapustin’s lively Trio, Op. 86, which includes a jazzy flute part. Around 1800, Vienna was the center of wind ensemble music, boasting a multitude of professional ensembles and an enormous output of repertoire. For students of the Early Music Institute, working on this repertoire on original instruments or their replicas is second nature; for those of the Wind Instruments Institute (clarinet, horn), it's an adventure that offers a fresh perspective on the world of historically informed performance practice, as the "old" instruments ultimately open up a new sonic world.

Childlike joy accompanied by pomp and lots of solo passages: the exciting programme conducted by François Leleux gives our woodwind players a chance to shine in two works. The charming Sinfonietta by English composer Ruth Gipps was composed in 1989 and is full of magical colours. While still a student, but already possessing enormous artistry, Richard Strauss composed his charming Serenade in E-flat major in 1881, in which the young Munich composer's enthusiasm for Mozart is clearly evident – and one of Mozart's works is also featured in this programme: In an interpretative interplay with our solo bassoonist Rie Koyama, we present his well-loved concerto for the slenderly upright woodwind instrument. Mozart wrote it in 1774 at the age of 18, which is why it also spreads youthful freshness. In Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Opus 102 for oboe and orchestra, our guest conductor performs the solo part himself. It dates from 1824, begins with a melancholic introduction and then unfolds an airy theme that is the springboard for brilliant variations. The programme concludes with a magnificent piece by Ravel, whose 150th birthday is being celebrated by the music world this year.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart received the commission for "Theatrical Director" from Emperor Joseph II on the occasion of a visit by the Dutch Governor-General. The idea of ​​writing a comedy about the theater and its stars supposedly originated with the emperor himself, in order to enhance the reputation of the German Singspiel. The musical portion of this one-act opera is relatively short at around twenty minutes; besides the overture, there are only four vocal numbers (an arietta, a rondo, a trio, and the final song), otherwise spoken dialogue predominates. It is primarily due to its many allusions to long-forgotten plays of the time that the overture has maintained its place in the concert hall.

An evening full of discoveries: This concert brings to light musical treasures that are all too rarely heard in the shadow of famous names. Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga’s First String Quartet – written when he was only 16 years old – reveals an astonishing genius who died far too young. The powerful piano quintet with double bass by Mozart’s pupil Johann Nepomuk Hummel combines classical and early romanticism, while Felix Mendelssohn’s youthful String Quintet op. 18 surprises with brilliance and vigour. This is accompanied by Fauré’s songful »3 Romances sans paroles« and Jules Auguste Demersseman’s virtuoso fantasy for alto saxophone – a real rarity. A programme of musical surprises.

The biggest night in classical music is back! After eight weeks and over 80 concerts, the 2025 BBC Proms celebrates with a Last Night spectacular, packed with musical surprises and star turns. Elim Chan conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in all the traditional favourites – anthems, folk songs and singalongs – with solo performances by ‘captivating’ soprano Louise Alder and ‘sensational’ trumpeter Alison Balsom. There’s a nod to this season’s Bernard Herrmann celebration, a mischevous sorcerer’s apprentice from Dukas, and premieres by Camille Pépin and Rachel Portman.

Pianopalooza is our week-long piano festival that will welcome and celebrate the debut of the Rogue Valley Symphony’s latest addition: a coveted Hamburg Steinway piano called The Raven. This will be a rare opportunity to hear star pianists and violinists putting the piano to the test with classical double concertos for violin and piano by classical contemporaries Mozart, Haydn, and Hummel, as well as major Romantic piano concertos by Rachmaninoff, Grieg, and Chopin. On June 29, 2024, Nabil Shehata gave his farewell performance as artistic director of the Südwestfalen Philharmonic. A search committee consisting of representatives from the orchestra, the sponsoring association, the support association, and district politicians, chaired by the district administrator, is currently deliberating on who he will pass the baton to.

The position at the helm of the State Orchestra in Siegen is undoubtedly in demand: Nearly 250 conductors from many different countries applied. "The response to the position was even greater than the last advertisement – ​​we are naturally very pleased about this. It shows that the South Westphalia Philharmonic is a sought-after orchestra and of interest to conductors from all over the world," said District Administrator Andreas Müller.

The Munich Philharmonic will be participating in the Long Night of Music 2025 from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM in Hall X of the Gasteig HP8, performing two masterpieces of chamber music: the Piano Quintet in E-flat minor by Johann Nepomuk Hummel and Franz Schubert's famous "Trout Quintet." Hummel, a celebrated piano virtuoso and composer, combined concertante brilliance with chamber music depth in his quintet—a work full of dramatic contrasts, virtuoso lightness, and early Romantic expressiveness. Such a quintet even served as a model for the young Schubert's "Trout Quintet." ‘I am the new Bacchus, pressing out glorious wine for the human spirit’ declared Ludwig van Beethoven. True, he wasn’t known for his modesty – but until you’ve heard his incredible Seventh Symphony in full, heart-pounding flight, you’ve never known just how intoxicating music can be. This is music that demands total commitment, body and soul and we can expect the young British conductor Adam Hickox to raise the roof tonight. First, though, he joins the RPO’s own Principal Trumpet, Matthew Williams, in the delightfully operatic concerto by Beethoven’s great friend Hummel – and ventures deep into the dark heart of the German forest in the Overture to Weber’s supernatural shocker Der Freischütz. The perfect opener to an evening of music to set the pulse racing.

After Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy left his parents' house in Berlin in 1829, his sister Fanny, who was married to the court painter Wilhelm Hensel, took over the management of the salon with the famous Sunday music. This was the only place where music lovers could experience her compositions, as her ambitions were not approved by her family for a long time. It was not until 1846 that Felix gave his blessing for the publication of his sister's compositions. Her last major work was the Piano Trio in D minor from 1847. Fanny's talent as a composer remained unnoticed for a long time - it was not until the turn of the 21st century that her work was systematically examined for musical practice.

Together with the Chamber Music Association Brage, Randers Kammerorkester presents the young pianist Rune Leicht Lund, who was born and raised in Randers. Rune Leicht Lund was only 12 years old when he first played with the Chamber Orchestra as a soloist in Beethoven's second piano concerto. Since then, he has given concerts with, among others, the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra, the Torun Symphony Orchestra and the Staatskapelle Weimar, and he has performed in, among others, the Konzerthaus Berlin, the Rheingau Music Festival, the Laeiszhalle Hamburg, the Tivoli Concert Hall and the DR Koncerthuset. He is currently studying at Musik und Kunst, Privatunivesität der Stadt Wien.

How could the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra give a more appropriate musical welcome to its new ARTIST IN RESIDENCE, the exceptional trumpeter Simon Höfele, than with the radiantly festive trumpet overture by the young Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy? While his Opus 101, premiered in 1828/1833, marks the time when the modern valve trumpet began its triumphal march, Simon Höfele first introduces himself to the Jena audience with Johann Nepomuk Hummel's Trumpet Concerto in E major, composed in 1803 for the Viennese court trumpeter Anton Weidinger, who was the first to be able to play notes chromatically across the entire scale on his newly invented keyed trumpet. He also has a surprise piece in his repertoire that - let's just say - revolutionized the art of trumpet playing in the 20th century and is now part of world musical literature. With a masterfully sparkling musical setting of water damage caused by magical amateurism – Paul Dukas' imaginative tone poem "L'Apprenti sorcier" from 1897, inspired by Goethe's famous ballad "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" – the Jena Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of General Music Director Simon Gaudenz, concludes its first Saturday concert.

If you love dead, white, male German composers as much as we do – and are not (yet!) familiar with the greatness of Johann Nepomuk Hummel – this concert exploring the arbitrariness of fame is for you. In 1819, Hummel organized a concert for the world-premiere performance of one of his works; for the occasion, Schubert wrote the Trout Quintet for the same combination of instruments. Guess which piece is all anyone remembers? Salastina recreates this concert – so that you can be the judge of whether or not posterity was fair to jettison a composer with a name as awesome as “Nepomuk.” Wine and munchies reception to follow.

We welcomed world-renowned violist and newest Artistic Partner Tabea Zimmermann back for a concert rich in history once forgotten. Starting with Fanny Mendelssohn’s Overture in C, which the composer wrote when she was about 25 years old, only for the work to be forgotten for over 150 years. Following the overture, Zimmermann performed as soloist in Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Potpourri (mit Fantasie), another work that languished in obscurity until recently. Felix Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony, inspired by the ruins of Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh, closed the concert.

Escape from the cold with the music of Mozart and Hummel in the intimate Sirote Theatre. Our very own Ryan Beach will perform Hummel’s Trumpet Concerto, which is known as a virtuoso showpiece. Mozart’s Symphony no. 36 was inspired by the warmth and hospitality of the people of Linz that heencountered during the visit.

After the New Year's Concert with Beethoven's 9th Symphony, including the jubilant "Ode to Joy," Stefan Blunier , a regular and welcome guest in Duisburg, returns to the podium of the Philharmonic a few months later for a no less overwhelming symphony: Anton Bruckner's 7th Symphony, a tremendous cathedral of sound and a moving reaction to the death of Richard Wagner, whom he admired and for him the "blessed, ardently beloved immortal master." Before this mighty work with its overwhelming aesthetic, the program features a piece that Carl-Sönje Montag describes with the words "virtuosity, elegance, and joy." He is actually the deputy principal bassoonist of the Duisburg Philharmonic, but for this concert he switches sides and stands as soloist in front of the orchestra. The first movement is "inviting and downright life-affirming," says Montag, "with its virtuoso passages and large interval leaps; the final rondo is folksy and humorous," while in the slow middle movement, "the cantable bassoonist's soul is allowed to sing out in melodic arches reminiscent of Hummel's teacher, Mozart." In short: for Carl-Sönje Montag, the piece is one of the three most important bassoon concertos in the Classical-Romantic repertoire, alongside those of Carl Maria von Weber and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart—not bad company.

The Times once enthusiastically described Håkan Hardenberger as "the best trumpeter in the galaxy" after a concert. Whether it's a classic concerto by Johann Nepomuk Hummel or new works by composers like Mark-Anthony Turnage, the Swede breathes life into the music with his trumpet, this time accompanied by the renowned Mahler Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Daniel Harding.

Lavish dinners, hearty village festivals, birthday parties, and weddings: this is what composers from Mozart's time wrote Harmoniemusik for. Large-scale works for woodwind ensembles with horns and double bass, which were equally effective in the ballroom, the threshing floor, or the village square. Once again, our musicians have chosen an entertaining genre that creates an almost orchestral splendor of sound on stage.
