Pianist Yunchan Lim, the youngest-ever winner of the Van Cliburn Competition, plays Chopin’s Second Concerto. Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 shows the composer’s gift for melody, from its brooding introduction to impassioned heights. In his NY Phil debut, Kazuki Yamada also conducts the US Premiere of Dai Fujikura’s Entwine, a musical metaphor for vital human connection.

Consolation and communion are this concert’s common themes. Conductor Kazuki Yamada leads the SF Symphony and Chorus in Fauré’s tenderly radiant and humane Requiem, an underrated stunner. Hailed for her sensitive and insightful interpretations, pianist Hélène Grimaud performs Ravel’s sprightly Piano Concerto in G major. In 1931, as he was finishing the concerto, Ravel explained that it was “written very much in the same spirit as [concertos by] Mozart and Saint-Saëns.”

A night of virtuosic fireworks from different musical and cultural traditions. The sounds of the far East in Dai Fujikura’s Shamisen Concerto are tempered by “a cadenza-like solo of dizzying rapidity that evokes prog-rock guitar as much as Paganini” (New York Times), while Tania León’s Rítmicas is based on “a rainbow of polyrhythmic inventions emerging from the Son and Guaguancó clave” of Cuba. The micropolyphonic textures of the oldest piece in tonight’s programme, György Ligeti’s Chamber Concerto, still sound as new as at its premiere in 1970.

For his seventh and final symphony, Sibelius distilled all his powers down to a succinct, momentous closing statement — an odyssey contained in just over 20 minutes. A newly commissioned work from Dai Fujikura takes its inspiration from this enigmatic work. We welcome back Augustin Hadelich to perform Britten’s Violin Concerto, composed in the growing shadows of World War II.
