FSO’s Season 77 opens with a joyful overture by Louise Farrenc, a pioneer woman composer, and two of the most famous (and rightfully so!) pieces ever composed. Pianist Chaeyoung Park plays Grieg’s beloved Piano Concerto in A minor, and we finish with the single most famous piece of Classical music—Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony!

Filled with short and spirited solo works, this recital by Orion Weiss—hailed as a “brilliant pianist” by The New York Times and praised for his “head-spinning range of colors” by the Chicago Tribune—lets listeners revel in lesser-known gems by major 19th- and 20th-century composers, from Tchaikovsky to Copland.

Orion Weiss Piano Recital

New Mexico Museum of Art

“The world turns on its dark side. It is winter…” Music speaks to us most directly when it engages with its times – and 90 years ago, few young composers understood that better than Michael Tippett. Composed during the Second World War but provoked by decades of intolerance, A Child of Our Time feels as urgent now as it did then, and with Ryan Wigglesworth conducting the National Youth Choir of Scotland, it’ll make an unforgettable climax to the BBC SSO’s 90th Anniversary Concert.

ATTACCA Concert: Great Romanticism

Bayerische Theaterakademie August Everding

Prize-winning young Viennese pianist Lukas Sternath makes his Proms debut in Grieg’s beloved Piano Concerto, with its heart-on-sleeve melodies and intimate lyricism. The piece is framed by two musical products of war: a haunting elegy by Vaughan Williams’s pupil Ruth Gipps, inspired by a William Blake illustration of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and anniversary-composer Arthur Bliss’s The Beatitudes, a cantata composed for the reopening in 1962 of Coventry Cathedral – part Passion, part howl of human loss, part musical prayer for a ‘troubled world’.

Highlighting dramatic works rightfully enshrined in their popularity, music director finalist Jacob Joyce describes this concert as “exploring three different country-specific approaches to Romanticism.”
