Felix Mendelssohn took more than five years to complete his beautiful Violin Concerto in E minor, and it was a hit from its very first performance. Even still, Taiwanese Australian violinist Ray Chen’s fresh and fiery performance is a showstopper that might leave you wondering how his instrument doesn’t burst into flames from the energy he creates.

Véronique Lacroix, the dynamic founding director of the Ensemble contemporain de Montréal, conducts colourful and compelling music by some of Canada’s finest contemporary composers. Sokolović’s music affectionately conjures childhood memories of a merry-go-round. Gilbert’s concerto is both dazzling and haunting, with translucent percussion sonorities filling the air. Ricketts' spacious and dramatic concerto gradually reveals a spellbinding narrative. Two bold works for solo instruments explore the sonic beauties and expressive possibilities of the harp and the tam-tam.

The first in a 3-year concert series - "Voices of NEC", featuring works by NEC faculty and alumni, tonight’s performance highlights choral works by former and current NEC faculty composers: George Chadwick, Arthur Shepherd, Daniel Pinkham, Kati Agócs, Michael Gandolfi, Felicia Sandler, and Mehmet Ali Sanlıkol.  Also on the program will be Stand with us by Lingbo Ma '24 DMA.  Erica J. Washburn, NEC's Director of Choral Activities, conducts.

New Music New England is a new initiative of the New England Philharmonic celebrating the new music works from New England. Each concert presents music by artists based in New England that have yet to be heard by the general public. This inaugural concert makes reference to the grand musical traditions of the region with Charles Ives’s Three Places in New England, together with music by Wang Lu, David Sanford, and Kati Agócs, which have yet to be heard in Boston. The concert’s grand finale features Grammy Award-winning organist Paul Jacobs in the long-awaited Boston premiere of John Harbison’s “What Do We Make of Bach!”
