Handel's beloved oratorio Messiah, with performances both in English and Spanish featuring BCSD's commissioned Spanish libretto by Mario Montenegro, and delivered with BCSD's customary virtuosity and vibrancy. The final performance on December 12 at Centro Cultural Tijuana will form part of a joint celebration marking the bicentennial of diplomatic relations between the United States and Mexico.

Directed by world-renowned guitarist and lutenist Richard Savino, El Mundo takes us on a treasure hunt through the archives of the Cathedral of Guatemala City, where classical 16th-century polyphony blended with secular indigenous dances to create a unique Hispanic style that still exists today. The archives contain numerous works by some of the most celebrated Latin American and Spanish composers of the 17th and 18th centuries, among them Juan Iribarren, Sebastián Durón, and Jose de Torres of Spain, as well as native-born Guatemalan composers Manuel José Quiroz and his nephew, Rafael Antonio Castellanos.

Developed for the Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibit Jerusalem 1000-1400: Every People under Heaven, this program features a mix of ancient sacred songs from the three Abrahamic religions that revere Jerusalem as a holy city. The concert weaves together music from the distinct and complementary traditions or Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, starting with an overlapping call of sacred sounds as might be heard in some hours at the Dung Gate, or Aleppo of a former decade, or in cities of North Africa, or Mumbai. The event introduces sonic memories representing echoes of practice that came into and out of focus in the richly intertextual, cross-pollinating “Middle Ages” of Jerusalem.
For this program, Schola Antiqua welcomes guest artists Nell Snaidas (soprano) and Amro Helmy (oud).
