What an opening! The Berlin Symphony Orchestra kicks off the new season and its first symphony concert with the overture to Richard Wagner's opera "The Mastersingers of Nuremberg." The rest of the program more than lives up to its motto "Piano & Forte." Pyotr I. Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 impresses with its famous, expansive opening theme. Sergei V. Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 begins no less impressively, with eight chords reminiscent of the tolling of bells.
