PNB's annual choreographers’ showcase, NEXT STEP, returns to McCaw Hall for a night of original danceworks. This year’s showcase features seven premieres choreographed by PNB company dancers Mark Cuddihee, Kyle Davis, Zsilas Michael Hughes, Noah Martzall, Joh Morrill, Miles Pertl, and James Kirby Rogers, all set on the Professional Division student dancers of PNB School – the dance stars of tomorrow, on stage today.

A crown jewel of America’s homegrown dance companies, the esteemed Joffrey Ballet returns to Berkeley to conclude its six-year campus residency.
In this delightfully varied program, the company showcases fresh new choreographic voices and works by an international group of renowned creators, many in their West Coast premieres.
Company artist Yoshihisa Arai’s Boléro is inspired by the popular orchestral piece by French composer Maurice Ravel; and Chanel DaSilva, the Joffrey’s 2020 Winning Works Choreographer, has set her new Swing Low to music by cellist Zoë Keating. Israeli choreographer Itzik Galili’s The Sofa, takes place on a single piece of vinyl-covered furniture. Birthday Variations is an enduring classic by Joffrey co-founder Gerald Arpino.
Rounding out the program, Joffrey ballet master Nicolas Blanc’s moving Under the Trees’ Voices, created during the pandemic, channels the power of community in the age of social distancing. The San Francisco Chronicle raved about the company’s last Berkeley performance of a Blanc work, during its most recent campus visit: “Mesmerizing…. The Chicago-based Joffrey company members, with their febrile flair, looked like they owned the piece. They danced with confidence, daring and disciplined self-possession.”

Known as the cultural renaissance that swept through Britain in the late 1990s and early 2000s, Cool Britannia celebrated innovation, creativity, and a sense of optimism. So too does this program, offering a contemporary take on tradition and pushing the boundaries of artistic expression with an evening recognizing the new wave of British voices in dance. Longtime SF Ballet fans will welcome the return of Wheeldon’s luminous Within the Golden Hour and McGregor’s inventive Chroma, set to an original score from The White Stripes’ Jack White III and Joby Talbot, and performed by our Grammy Award-winning Orchestra. The highly anticipated North American premiere of Akram Khan’s Dust, a one-act exploration of the human experience amidst the haunting backdrop of the aftermath of World War I, closes the evening.

   - **Description:** Cathy Marston’s "Heimat" is a dance interpretation of Wagner's symphonic poem "Siegfried Idyll." It paints a serene picture of a family in the Swiss countryside and explores the concept of "heimat," a term that suggests a place of spiritual and creative familiarity.

3. **Under the Trees' Voices**
   - **Choreography:** Nicolas Blanc
   - **Music:** Ezio Bosso
   - **Description:** Set to Symphony No. 2 by Bosso, Nicolas Blanc’s "Under the Trees’ Voices" examines the persistence of community and connection in the age of distance and isolation. The piece imagines a future of hope and unity, reminding us that we are better together than alone.

4. **Andante**
   - **Choreography:** Yuri Possokhov
   - **Music:** Dmitri Shostakovich
   - **Description:** Renowned choreographer Yuri Possokhov returns with an intimate world premiere set on three dancers. Possokhov is celebrated for his critically acclaimed works, including "Anna Karenina," "The Miraculous Mandarin," and "Don Quixote."
