Rappaccini’s Daughter (1992) was composed by Daniel Catán and adapted from Nathaniel Hawthorne’s haunting short story, Rappaccini’s Daughter is set in the mysterious city of Padua. It follows Dr. Rappaccini, a brilliant but secretive botanist who raises his daughter, Beatrice, in a secluded garden teeming with toxic plants—rendering her own touch lethal. When Giovanni, a curious young student, encounters Beatrice, he is drawn into a perilous romance marked by obsession, forbidden knowledge, and the dangerous consequences of scientific ambition.

Glamorous opera legend Florencia Grimaldi is traveling incognito by steamboat through the enchanted rainforest in hopes of finding her long lost love. Wracked by storms and a cholera outbreak, she and her fellow passengers are drawn deeper into the Amazon, where fantasy and reality intertwine, and their hopes and dreams are tested.

Crystal Manich returns after her celebrated West Side Story to direct this new production. Set on a steamboat voyaging down the enchanted Amazon rainforest, the glamorous Florencia and the other passengers go on a life-changing adventure. Charged with the magical realism of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, the opera blurs the boundaries of the real and the fantastic to explore and reveal longing, grief and love. Mo. Marcheso conducts.

Inspired by the magical realism found in the works of Gabriel Garcia Márquez, Florencia en el Amazonas follows the story of Florencia Grimaldi, a famous soprano returning home to sing at the opera house in Manaus with hopes that the performance will attract her love Cristóbal, a butterfly hunter who has gone missing in the jungle.
