In the summer of 1901, Mahler's health crisis inevitably led him to think about his own mortality. This was one of his most prolific summers during which he composed several songs with texts from Friedrich Rückert's Kindertotenlieder. Mahler quotes from one of these songs on the final page of his Ninth Symphony. Mahler's wife, Alma, was not pleased at the subject matter, “For Heaven’s sake, don’t tempt Providence!” On this program we also offer the Clarinet Trio by Alexander Zemlinksy who was once in love with Alma Schindler, the future Alma Mahler.

Earl Lee is a renowned Korean-Canadian cellist and conductor, currently Music Director of the Ann Arbor Symphony. He also served as assistant conductor of the Boston Symphony, resident conductor of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and associate conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony. He is the 2022 recipient of The Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award.

Gustavo Dudamel — the Oscar L. Tang and H.M. Agnes Hsu-Tang Music and Artistic Director Designate — and Artist-in-Residence Sheku Kanneh-Mason join the Orchestra for Bloch’s impassioned Schelomo, in which the solo cello voices the anguish, sensuality, and broken majesty of King Solomon. Dudamel also conducts Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite and a new work by Pulitzer Prize winner Ellen Reid.

Court Kapellmeister – a title that composers were extremely keen on until the 19th century. At the Danish court in Copenhagen in 1861, it was Niels Wilhelm Gade who was delighted to be appointed to this position. It was during this time that he composed his Piano Trio in F major op. 42 – a work in which he audibly recalled the period of his life in Leipzig, during which he was the Gewandhaus Kapellmeister and associated with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann. Ernest Bloch, whose works are influenced by Jewish musical traditions, was both a reconciler and an admonisher of music. His second violin sonata, titled Poème mystique, is impressionistic in tone and alternates between meditative and highly expressive passages. In it, Bloch combines Jewish melodies and synagogue chants with Gregorian chorales from the early Christian church. In 1899, the string octet by the 16-year-old Felix Mendelssohn aroused the ambition of George Enescu, who was only a little older at the time. The Romanian composer maximised the sonic power of this large string ensemble with sweeping melodic arcs and intense furor.

This nautical program explores the deep connection between water and orchestral color, as composers evoke crashing waves, shifting tides, and misty shores through sound. Concertmaster Luke Hill takes center stage in Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, a sweeping work of folk-inspired lyricism.

After intermission, the journey continues with Bloch’s Poems of the Sea and Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides, concluding with Frank Bridge’s The Sea – a lush, cinematic portrait of the ocean’s every-changing moods.

Here we present works for violin and piano by four innovative composers from across the European continent, each influenced by world events and societies around them, bringing a unique character to a classic genre: the violin-piano duo.

The third concert in our America 250 series opens with Ernest Bloch’s Schelomo: Hebraic Rhapsody. This biblically-inspired work will feature our own Principal Cello Andre Gaskins portraying the voice of King Solomon. When three teenagers formed a piano trio in 2013, they were still students and performed under the name "Trio Chagall." More than ten years later, the three friends from Turin have become a professional trio, playing with Italian passion and now appearing as "rising stars" in Europe's prestigious concert halls. As their career progressed, a new name was needed: Inspired by Michelangelo, they called themselves "Trio Concept," with the vision of carving out the beauty of a work like a sculpture from a block of marble.

Led by renowned German conductor Kevin John Edusei, the Colburn Orchestra returns to The Wallis with a lavish program spotlighting the rich cultural heritages of its composers. “The rich diversity of American society has fostered a vibrant tapestry of musical voices, each shaped by their own distinct backgrounds. Michael and I curated this program for violin and piano to celebrate that spirit of innovation and cultural exchange, highlighting works composed during the twentieth century. We begin with Fritz Kreisler’s Praeludium and Allegro, a lush reimagining of Baroque melody. Charles Ives follows with his inventive Violin Sonata no. 4, blending hymns, folk tunes, and bold harmonies to create a vibrantly eclectic soundscape of American life. The first half closes with Ernest Bloch’s Violin Sonata no. 2, Poème mystique, which shifts to a more introspective tone, offering profound emotional depth rooted in his Jewish heritage. The second half opens with John Adams’s Road Movies, a rhythmic portrayal of contemporary life, and continues with Amy Beach’s Romance for Violin and Piano, honoring one of America’s pioneering female composers. We conclude with Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess Suite, a brilliant fusion of classical and jazz traditions–a testament to the cultural mosaic of twentieth-century American music.”

For the third and final time, artist in residence Sheku Kanneh-Mason will be a guest soloist with the Konzerthausorchester. With his cello, he lends his voice to King Solomon, as Ernest Bloch's ‘Schelomo’, first performed in New York in 1917, is a dialogue between the biblical ruler and his people. This in turn speaks from the orchestra. In terms of its musical structure, the short 20-minute, late-romatic neoclassical rhapsody could easily pass for film music: It illustrates the world view and character of the king, who, like other people, knows happy and darker phases of life. The composer's desire to create vital Jewish music is expressed in numerous sound quotations.

This performance promises a reflection on identity, tradition, and the transcendent power of music to connect us to our roots and to each other. Ernest Bloch’s Schelomo is a soul-stirring journey through Jewish history and culture, encapsulated in the rich, emotive tones of the cello performed by. These performances welcome back celebrated cellist and Toledo favorite, Julian Schwarz, for in his fifth Toledo performance. Ernest Bloch’s Avodath Hakodesh (Sacred Service), a choral-orchestral masterwork for cantor, chorus, and full orchestra “remains the watershed (by many assessments peerless) artistic engagement with the Hebrew liturgy… It was conceived as a transcendent, even inclusive humanistic work of universal spiritual experience” (Neil Levin, Milken Archive). A pinnacle of drama in the Jewish musical canon, this work speaks to Jews and to the masses, much like the great masterworks of other traditions. Grounded in tradition, but revolutionary in its scope, Bloch’s Avodath Hakodesh is a can’t-miss sacred work. For the grand conclusion of its 275th Anniversary celebration, KKBE is partnering with the Charleston Symphony and Taylor Festival Choir with KKBE’s Music & Artistic Director, Bates O’Neal, and choir, Koleinu, to bring an unforgettable performance of this work, along with other works by Mahler, Korngold, and Bernstein!

The symphonic favorites featured on this program are what keep us coming back for more! Enjoy Ravel’s famous Boléro, a mesmerizing showcase for many of the instruments of the orchestra. Hindemith’s brilliant Symphonic Metamorphosis is his most well-known output and was immediately embraced by the public upon its premiere in 1944. Bloch’s glorious Schelomo: “Hebrew Rhapsody,” celebrates his Jewish heritage and features CSO principal cellist Luis Biava as soloist. Bizet’s exciting L’Arlésienne Suite No. 1 is inspired by the folk dances of Provence.

Their winter concert will see the return of an old friend, Jamie Walton – a superlative cellist and soloist in the rarely played, but utterly beautiful Shelomo by Ernst Bloch. Antonín Dvorák lived was the head of the first music conservatory in the United States, encouraging American composers to use folk music to create a national style. Ernst Bloch was the president of Cleveland Institute of Music and San Francisco Conservatory, while composing his distinctive music. Amy Beach, the lone American composer on the program, was educated in the European tradition while studying at the New England Conservatory

French violinist Virgil Boutellis-Taft comes to Zankel Hall for a program of impassioned music from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Virgil is joined by pianist Juyoung Park for Saint-Saëns’ fervent Danse macabre, Bloch’s deeply moving “Nigun,” and other selections from his second album, Incantation, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. Also featured are Schumann’s Violin Sonata No. 1 in A Minor, and Janáček’s Violin Sonata.

In a statement, Martinez and Bell said, “Our concept for the ‘Voice and the Violin’ program began during the pandemic, while we were quarantined and finding new ways to collaborate and enjoy music together. Although finding repertoire written specifically for violin and voice can be a challenge, we discovered and fell in love with these gems featured in tonight’s performance."

Soprano Larisa Martinez and violinist Joshua Bell present a new concert program, Voice and the Violin, an evening of beloved romantic arias and modern classics.

Acclaimed worldwide for his profound musicianship and technical mastery, British cellist Steven Isserlis enjoys a uniquely varied career as a soloist, chamber musician, educator, author and broadcaster. He appears with the world’s leading orchestras and conductors, including the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Zurich Tonhalle and Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestras; and gives recitals every season in major musical centres. As a chamber musician, he has curated concert series for such prestigious venues as Wigmore Hall, 92nd St Y and the Salzburg Festival. Unusually, he also directs chamber orchestras from the cello.

American cellist Sterling Elliott joins Daniel Hope and New Century for Haydn’s beloved first cello concerto, a virtuoso showpiece for the instrument. In the second half of the program, Igor Stravinsky’s playful ballet suite from Pulcinella offers a contrasting 20th-century response to Haydn, using the amorous hijinks of the famous Italian clown to tinker unpredictably (and to the delight of modern audiences) with the shapes and patterns of centuries-old Classical melodies.
