Join us for the spring performance of the Michigan Youth Symphonic Band, the Michigan Youth Philharmonia Orchestra, and the Michigan Youth Symphony Orchestra. These ensembles are part of the Michigan Youth Ensembles (MYE) program, which brings together exceptional high school students for weekly rehearsals at SMTD. MYE Students, who are selected by audition, have the opportunity to engage in a stimulating environment, while learning from U-M conductors, applied faculty, and graduate students.

This nautical program explores the deep connection between water and orchestral color, as composers evoke crashing waves, shifting tides, and misty shores through sound. Concertmaster Luke Hill takes center stage in Bruch’s Scottish Fantasy, a sweeping work of folk-inspired lyricism.

After intermission, the journey continues with Bloch’s Poems of the Sea and Mendelssohn’s The Hebrides, concluding with Frank Bridge’s The Sea – a lush, cinematic portrait of the ocean’s every-changing moods.

The third concert in our America 250 series opens with Ernest Bloch’s Schelomo: Hebraic Rhapsody. This biblically-inspired work will feature our own Principal Cello Andre Gaskins portraying the voice of King Solomon. A piece for all the people, the evening’s finale will be the Metropolis Symphony by Michael Daugherty, a five-movement work inspired by Superman comics.

Winner of the Grammy Award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo in 2020, as well as Best Female Artist at both 2012 and 2013 Classical BRIT Awards, Ms. Benedetti’s most recent recording features works written especially for her by jazz musician Wynton Marsalis: Violin Concerto in D Major and Fiddle Dance Suite for Solo Violin.

When three teenagers formed a piano trio in 2013, they were still students and performed under the name "Trio Chagall." More than ten years later, the three friends from Turin have become a professional trio, playing with Italian passion and now appearing as "rising stars" in Europe's prestigious concert halls. As their career progressed, a new name was needed: Inspired by Michelangelo, they called themselves "Trio Concept," with the vision of carving out the beauty of a work like a sculpture from a block of marble.

Led by renowned German conductor Kevin John Edusei, the Colburn Orchestra returns to The Wallis with a lavish program spotlighting the rich cultural heritages of its composers. The concert opens with Ernest Bloch’s Jewish-inspired masterpiece Schelomo, an intense and poignant rhapsody that casts the cello as King Solomon and the orchestra as a world full of temptation. Bedřich Smetana’s Má vlast (“My Country”) then invites the audience on a journey through Bohemia’s countryside and lore in a rousing, atmospheric love letter to his Czech homeland.

Combining stunning performance with storytelling, Nicola shares a selection of shorter works – from romantic to virtuosic to folk - combined with her thoughts surrounding her choices of music, as well as her experiences over the past decade. “The rich diversity of American society has fostered a vibrant tapestry of musical voices, each shaped by their own distinct backgrounds. Michael and I curated this program for violin and piano to celebrate that spirit of innovation and cultural exchange, highlighting works composed during the twentieth century. We begin with Fritz Kreisler’s Praeludium and Allegro, a lush reimagining of Baroque melody. Charles Ives follows with his inventive Violin Sonata no. 4, blending hymns, folk tunes, and bold harmonies to create a vibrantly eclectic soundscape of American life. The first half closes with Ernest Bloch’s Violin Sonata no. 2, Poème mystique, which shifts to a more introspective tone, offering profound emotional depth rooted in his Jewish heritage. The second half opens with John Adams’s Road Movies, a rhythmic portrayal of contemporary life, and continues with Amy Beach’s Romance for Violin and Piano, honoring one of America’s pioneering female composers. We conclude with Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess Suite, a brilliant fusion of classical and jazz traditions–a testament to the cultural mosaic of twentieth-century American music.”

For the third and final time, artist in residence Sheku Kanneh-Mason will be a guest soloist with the Konzerthausorchester. With his cello, he lends his voice to King Solomon, as Ernest Bloch's ‘Schelomo’, first performed in New York in 1917, is a dialogue between the biblical ruler and his people. This in turn speaks from the orchestra. In terms of its musical structure, the short 20-minute, late-romatic neoclassical rhapsody could easily pass for film music: It illustrates the world view and character of the king, who, like other people, knows happy and darker phases of life. The composer's desire to create vital Jewish music is expressed in numerous sound quotations.

This performance promises a reflection on identity, tradition, and the transcendent power of music to connect us to our roots and to each other. Ernest Bloch’s Schelomo is a soul-stirring journey through Jewish history and culture, encapsulated in the rich, emotive tones of the cello performed by. These performances welcome back celebrated cellist and Toledo favorite, Julian Schwarz, for in his fifth Toledo performance. Mahler’s Symphony No. 1, named  “Titan,” transports listeners through a symphonic landscape that weaves subtle threads of the composer's heritage into a tapestry of universal human emotion.

Ernest Bloch’s Avodath Hakodesh (Sacred Service), a choral-orchestral masterwork for cantor, chorus, and full orchestra “remains the watershed (by many assessments peerless) artistic engagement with the Hebrew liturgy… It was conceived as a transcendent, even inclusive humanistic work of universal spiritual experience” (Neil Levin, Milken Archive). A pinnacle of drama in the Jewish musical canon, this work speaks to Jews and to the masses, much like the great masterworks of other traditions. Grounded in tradition, but revolutionary in its scope, Bloch’s Avodath Hakodesh is a can’t-miss sacred work. For the grand conclusion of its 275th Anniversary celebration, KKBE is partnering with the Charleston Symphony and Taylor Festival Choir with KKBE’s Music & Artistic Director, Bates O’Neal, and choir, Koleinu, to bring an unforgettable performance of this work, along with other works by Mahler, Korngold, and Bernstein!

The symphonic favorites featured on this program are what keep us coming back for more! Enjoy Ravel’s famous Boléro, a mesmerizing showcase for many of the instruments of the orchestra. Hindemith’s brilliant Symphonic Metamorphosis is his most well-known output and was immediately embraced by the public upon its premiere in 1944. Bloch’s glorious Schelomo: “Hebrew Rhapsody,” celebrates his Jewish heritage and features CSO principal cellist Luis Biava as soloist. Bizet’s exciting L’Arlésienne Suite No. 1 is inspired by the folk dances of Provence.

Their winter concert will see the return of an old friend, Jamie Walton – a superlative cellist and soloist in the rarely played, but utterly beautiful Shelomo by Ernst Bloch. Antonín Dvorák lived was the head of the first music conservatory in the United States, encouraging American composers to use folk music to create a national style. Ernst Bloch was the president of Cleveland Institute of Music and San Francisco Conservatory, while composing his distinctive music. Amy Beach, the lone American composer on the program, was educated in the European tradition while studying at the New England Conservatory

The early years of the 20th century witnessed the emergence of a remarkable new approach to composition. This program highlights works by four of the finest composers from this era. In the works of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor—one of the most renowned composers of his time—and Reynaldo Hahn audiences will hear genius at work. Known primarily as a violin virtuoso, Eugène Ysaÿe created music that is now regarded as pioneering. Finally, in the piano quintet of the Swiss-American Ernest Bloch, we find one of the most skillful, inventive, and riveting examples of the genre ever created.

The program commemorates 60 years since the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited discrimination based on race, religion, sex, or national origin. The composers and themes represent those groups whose rights were affirmed by this historic legislation, including works by African American, women, and immigrant composers. One highlight of the program is Can You See? by The Cleveland Orchestra’s Daniel R. Lewis Composer Fellow Allison Loggins-Hull, which received its first performances in May 2023.

As you anxiously await the performance of “Shostakovich Symphony No. 5”, LSO will first bring you Beethoven’s “Overture to Coriolan”, depicting the Roman leader, Gaius Marcius Coriolanus’ transition from brutality to tenderness, followed by Bloch’s “Schelomo”. The voice of Schelomo (Hebrew name for King Solomon) is the cello which embodies the greatness, glory, and sensuality of the great King. When Shostakovich takes center stage, his fifth symphony opens with the color of glistening rivers by the strings, doom-laden fanfares from brass and percussion, followed by the largo movement of lamenting, and finally the furious explosion of brass and timpani in the final movement—with flurries of strings and woodwinds as it rushes to a thundering finale. A must see and hear!

In a partnership with the California Festival: a Celebration of New Music, this Chamber Music Tuesday features SFCM alumni ensemble L'Arc Trio in performance with students. The concert also features two new and exciting works by Bay Area composers Jonathan Bingham and Vivian Fung, as well as one of Ernest Bloch's greatest chamber music works. Fung’s piano trio Ominous Machine was written for the L’Arc Trio and the performance will be a world premiere. Emerging Black Composers Project winner Jonathan Bingham wrote his string quartet Pareidolia in 2022 for the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra.
