Antonín Dvorák lived was the head of the first music conservatory in the United States, encouraging American composers to use folk music to create a national style. Ernst Bloch was the president of Cleveland Institute of Music and San Francisco Conservatory, while composing his distinctive music. Amy Beach, the lone American composer on the program, was educated in the European tradition while studying at the New England Conservatory

French violinist Virgil Boutellis-Taft comes to Zankel Hall for a program of impassioned music from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Virgil is joined by pianist Juyoung Park for Saint-Saëns’ fervent Danse macabre, Bloch’s deeply moving “Nigun,” and other selections from his second album, Incantation, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London. Soprano Larisa Martinez and violinist Joshua Bell present a new concert program, Voice and the Violin, an evening of beloved romantic arias and modern classics.

In a statement, Martinez and Bell said, “Our concept for the ‘Voice and the Violin’ program began during the pandemic, while we were quarantined and finding new ways to collaborate and enjoy music together. Although finding repertoire written specifically for violin and voice can be a challenge, we discovered and fell in love with these gems featured in tonight’s performance."

Acclaimed worldwide for his profound musicianship and technical mastery, British cellist Steven Isserlis enjoys a uniquely varied career as a soloist, chamber musician, educator, author and broadcaster. He appears with the world’s leading orchestras and conductors, including the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Berlin Philharmonic, Vienna Philharmonic, London Philharmonic, Zurich Tonhalle and Los Angeles Philharmonic orchestras; and gives recitals every season in major musical centres. As a chamber musician, he has curated concert series for such prestigious venues as Wigmore Hall, 92nd St Y and the Salzburg Festival. Unusually, he also directs chamber orchestras from the cello.

The early years of the 20th century witnessed the emergence of a remarkable new approach to composition. This program highlights works by four of the finest composers from this era. In the works of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor—one of the most renowned composers of his time—and Reynaldo Hahn audiences will hear genius at work. Known primarily as a violin virtuoso, Eugène Ysaÿe created music that is now regarded as pioneering. Finally, in the piano quintet of the Swiss-American Ernest Bloch, we find one of the most skillful, inventive, and riveting examples of the genre ever created.

The program commemorates 60 years since the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibited discrimination based on race, religion, sex, or national origin. The composers and themes represent those groups whose rights were affirmed by this historic legislation, including works by African American, women, and immigrant composers. One highlight of the program is Can You See? by The Cleveland Orchestra’s Daniel R. Lewis Composer Fellow Allison Loggins-Hull, which received its first performances in May 2023.

As you anxiously await the performance of “Shostakovich Symphony No. 5”, LSO will first bring you Beethoven’s “Overture to Coriolan”, depicting the Roman leader, Gaius Marcius Coriolanus’ transition from brutality to tenderness, followed by Bloch’s “Schelomo”. The voice of Schelomo (Hebrew name for King Solomon) is the cello which embodies the greatness, glory, and sensuality of the great King. When Shostakovich takes center stage, his fifth symphony opens with the color of glistening rivers by the strings, doom-laden fanfares from brass and percussion, followed by the largo movement of lamenting, and finally the furious explosion of brass and timpani in the final movement—with flurries of strings and woodwinds as it rushes to a thundering finale. A must see and hear!

In a partnership with the California Festival: a Celebration of New Music, this Chamber Music Tuesday features SFCM alumni ensemble L'Arc Trio in performance with students. The concert also features two new and exciting works by Bay Area composers Jonathan Bingham and Vivian Fung, as well as one of Ernest Bloch's greatest chamber music works. Fung’s piano trio Ominous Machine was written for the L’Arc Trio and the performance will be a world premiere. Emerging Black Composers Project winner Jonathan Bingham wrote his string quartet Pareidolia in 2022 for the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra.

Variety abounded; no musical style dominated, and anyone could become an artist. This eclectic sampling of music from the most changeable era in world history was foreshadowed by Beethoven, whose creativity and artistic independence remained unmatched.

Enjoy music under the stars with this free Houston Symphony performance at Miller Outdoor Theatre. Conductor Vinay Parameswaran leads Beethoven’s beloved Symphony No. 7, and Houston Symphony violinist Sergei Galperin dazzles with performances of Ravel’s crowd-pleasing Tzigane and Bloch’s “Nigun” from Baal Shem. The program also includes Anna Clyne’s This Midnight Hour, inspired by poetry of Charles Baudelaire and Juan Ramón Jiménez.

Arian Khaefi takes the podium to conduct this program of rich choral and symphonic repertoire. We’ll open with R. Nathaniel Dett’s The Chariot Jubilee, a spell-binding oratorio that is “deep rooted in Spirituals and folklore.” We’ll then present Young Artists Competition winner from 2021, Ayrton Coehlo Pisco, as soloist in Mendelssohn’s gorgeous Violin Concerto. The program will conclude with Ernst Bloch’s monumental Avodat Hakodesh. Rarely performed, this epic sacred work for baritone, chorus, and orchestra represents the full maturity of Bloch’s music in the Jewish tradition.

From Bartók’s passion for learning and collecting the music of his Hungarian homeland to Bloch’s inspiration from both Jewish religious and secular music, and Vaughan Williams’s love of arranging new English discoveries for orchestra, composers have always been fascinated by folk music; learning about it, popularising it and weaving it into their work for orchestra. Much of what you will hear in this concert has its roots in folk music familiar to and beloved by the featured composers and it makes for a vibrant and dramatic evening of music – you might even spot a local favourite!

Their winter concert will see the return of an old friend, Jamie Walton – a superlative cellist and soloist in the rarely played, but utterly beautiful Shelomo by Ernst Bloch. In the second half, they will perform the exciting 9th Symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich – a deliciously light-hearted work in Shostakovich’s inimitable harmonic style with some gorgeous tunes, especially in the woodwind, and a mischievous glint in the eye! Becoming aware of this can be comforting and dealing with these emotions can even have a healing effect. Peter Tchaikovsky's 4th Symphony is pain turned into sound and the expression of a deep personal crisis: his unhappy marriage plunged the homosexual composer into depression, and death seemed to him the only way out.
