When one speaks of the Czech chamber music tradition, one must not forget its crowning discipline: the string quartet. The April concert will belong to a a national treasure — the Wihan Quartet who celebrate their 40th anniversary. Before tackling Beethoven and Schubert, the ensemble will also perform music by this year’s Czech Philharmonic Composer-in-Residence Bryce Dessner.

Elegance, lightness and tonal refinement – this programme captures the unmistakable spirit of French music. Works by Camille Saint-Saëns, Gabriel Fauré, Claude Debussy and Ernest Chausson can be heard between subtle melody and dance-like drive – finely orchestrated, full of esprit and sensuality. From the delicate combination of harp and violin to Chausson’s large-scale concerto for violin, piano and string quartet, an evening of French charm and tonal finesse unfolds.

Elbphilharmonie Hamburg

On 10 October 1894, the first concert of the Czech Chamber Music Society took place at the Rudolfinum. The Bohemian Quartet, of which Josef Suk was a member, played a programme of music by Smetana, Taneyev, and Dvořák. In this anniversary concert, the Talich Quartet will show how these composers’ music can still speak to audiences 130 years on. Joining them in his return to the Dvořák Hall is Lawrence Dutton, violist of the Emerson String Quartet.
