This transformative initiative, dedicated to amplifying the voices of incarcerated composers, will present a free public concert at Carnegie Hall featuring world premieres of original songs and compositions created by individuals currently and formerly incarcerated in maximum-security facilities across the United States—including Sing Sing Correctional Facility (NY), Fishkill Correctional Facility (NY), Lee Correctional Facility (SC), Cheshire Correctional Facility (CT), and San Quentin State Rehabilitation Center (CA).

Max Richter is one of the most influential and acclaimed composers of all time. His fusion of classical technique and electronic technology, heard across genre-defining solo albums and countless scores for film, dance, art and fashion, has won him legions of fans around the world and blazed a trail for a generation of musicians. For his upcoming world tour, Richter joins forces with the American Contemporary Music Ensemble to perform music from his latest album release, In A Landscape, and his earlier album, The Blue Notebooks (2004).

Max Richter is one of the most influential and acclaimed composers of all time. His fusion of classical technique and electronic technology, heard across genre-defining solo albums and countless scores for film, dance, art and fashion, has won him legions of fans around the world and blazed a trail for a generation of musicians. Over the last two decades, Richter has brought his distinctly humane and emotive sensibility to a series of ambitious projects – among them, a reimagining of Vivaldi’s violin concertos, the landmark nine-hour album Sleep and his score for Wayne McGregor’s ballet Woolf Works – along with the acclaimed collection The Blue Notebooks and a string of influential solo records. After spending many years grappling with big ideas and thorny social and political questions, the making of In A Landscape has opened up another, greener world for Richter. Making music remains, above all, “a way to make a kind of alternate reality,” a constructed world “where everything is in its place.”

Believing that “the world needs curiosity,” Warren Wilson is a campus community that fosters relationships with community partners through meaningful engagement, sustainable agriculture practices, and by educating the next generation of “curiously insightful, experienced, and capable individuals.” 

Decoda cannot wait to celebrate ten years of our unique summer festival, which is dedicated to training the next generation of young artists to rethink and reimagine their role in society. Through outstanding chamber music making, creative collaboration, and hands-on project design and development, DCMF cultivates the vision of community through music with the young artists of tomorrow.

Elgar’s Cello Concerto is undoubtedly one of the most impassioned and emotionally expressive pieces of music ever written, perfect for setting the tone for a romantic Valentine’s Day week. Brought to life by Music Director finalist Nadège Foofat, each note weaves its way into your soul, captivating and moving you to places that defy description. And when played by the equally dazzling and expressive soloist Claire Bryant, checking your own emotions will be no small feat. And while Elgar’s lush piece is the capstone, we begin with Jennifer Higdon’s soaringly tender and contemplative blue cathedral, which will set your soul to singing. The program concludes with Schumann’s illustrative and idyllic Symphony No. 3.
