"I write my own South Sami lyrics and songs because there was no South Sami music I could hear growing up," says the young singer Marja Mortensson, who was born into a reindeer herding family in Norway. Like no other, the now 30-year-old experiments with traditional joik singing, continually breathing new life into it – literally, together with jazz tubist Daniel Herskedal in her current project "Båalmaldahkesne – Entwined," which is traveling from Norway to Hamburg for the "Arctic Voices" festival.
