The hypnotic vocals of Rekpo, Mayunkiki, and Hisae, the three singers of the Japanese group Marewrew, unfold like dub music: They sit in a circle, one begins, the others join slightly out of phase. "Ukouk" is the name given to this traditional canon song of the Ainu, who have inhabited the northern region of the Japanese archipelago, particularly the island of Hokkaido, since ancient times. Marewrew's fresh versions shed new light on these fascinating songs, which have been passed down exclusively orally for generations. Traditionally sung by an all-female vocal group, the renowned Japanese musician OKI will join them for the concert at the Elbphilharmonie, not only singing but also playing hand percussion and the five-stringed Ainu harp, the tonkori.
