Join us for an evening of exceptional percussion performance by Cameron Marquez, a talented Master of Music student at the Northwestern Bienen School of Music. This captivating recital is scheduled for Wednesday, May 29, 2024, at 6:00pm CDT, taking place in the intimate setting of the Shirley Welsh Ryan Opera Theater.

Under the guidance of She-e Wu, Cameron Marquez will showcase his mastery through a diverse program that includes works by Michael Jarrell, José Manuel López López, Mark Applebaum, Joseph Schwantner, and Tobias Broström. The pieces range from the intricate rhythms of "Entlehnungen" to the dynamic energy of "Velocities," promising an evening of rich musical exploration.

Get your tickets today to experience the moment when our YO musicians take the stage to perform with their St. Louis Symphony Orchestra counterparts in a side-by-side concert led by Leonard Slatkin, SLSO Conductor Laureate and founder of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra. Slatkin leads the combined musicians through Johannes Brahms’ Academic Festival Overture followed by Joseph Schwantner’s evocative New Morning for the World (Daybreak of Freedom), which features narrator and Director of SLSO’s IN UNISON Chorus Kevin McBeth channeling the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s stirring Francesca da Rimini: Symphonic Fantasy after Dante brings the program to a powerful close.

An emotional and moving New Morning for the World: Daybreak of Freedom by Joseph Schwantner, incorporating excerpts from the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., caps off a thrilling musical experience in November.  Featuring the west coast premiere of a work by critical darling Anna Clyne, and Titus Underwood’s first ever appearance with PCSO in a work revealing incredible virtuosity, the moments we share in this concert fuel our appreciation for the power of music at its finest.

When the Pacifica Quartet and guitarist Sharon Isbin join forces, magic happens. They’ll begin with Sharon Isbin’s own arrangement of Vivaldi’s delightful Guitar Concerto in D. Joseph Schwantner's Song of a Dreaming Sparrow was commissioned by the 92nd Street Y in New York and received its world premiere last November. It’s the second work Schwantner composed for the multiple Grammy Award-winning guitarist. The title is a line from Thoreau’s, “A Week on the Concord and Merrimack River” a narrative of a boat trip Thoreau took with his brother John in 1839: “At intervals we were serenaded by the song of a dreaming sparrow.” The collaboration resumes with the catchy Fandango from Boccherini’s Guitar Quintet No. 4. Beethoven’s astonishing and profound late string quartet in A minor concludes the program. Its famous third movement entitled “Song of Thanksgiving to the Deity from a convalescent in the Lydian mode” is a prayer of gratitude following illness and an expression of joy for the gift of life. Don’t miss this evening of extraordinary artistry as Sharon Isbin and the Pacifica Quartet take the stage in Harris Concert Hall!

The NMSO welcomes Titus Underwood, Principal Oboe of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra and the 2021 recipient of the Sphinx Medal of Excellence award and a 2021 Midsouth Regional Emmy winner for his work as film director on We Are Nashville. Titus performs the thrilling and exotic Spirit of the Wild oboe concerto by Australian composer Nigel Westlake, and he pairs with NMSO Principal Oboe Austin Smith to perform Vivaldi’s delightful Concerto for Two Oboes in D Minor. By popular demand, the orchestra reprises the dynamic work New Morning for the World by Joseph Schwantner, featuring Tupelo’s own Zell Long delivering the powerful words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
