In her songs and in her celebrated memoir, Michelle Zauner has written eloquently about heartache, pain, and her identity as a Korean American woman. With her latest album, the Grammy-nominated Jubilee, she’s written about something even more difficult to tackle: joy. Taking a page from the bright lights and flapping rhythms of Björk’s Homogenic, she works in bold colors and big textures, “recalling the optimism of youth and applying it to adulthood,” as she says. Her band makes their Walt Disney Concert Hall debut with a set of massive songs that are grounded in Zauner's early days in the punk underground and girded by what she calls the “constant struggle we have with ourselves to be better people.”

Multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Ichiko Aoba encompasses jazz, folk, bossa nova, ambient, and classical in her sweeping, awe-inspiring music. Known for her unassuming but utterly transfixing solo performances, she explores connection, nature, and climate change in her writing, and she’s collaborated with everyone from Ryuichi Sakamoto and Cornelius to Mac DeMarco and Black Country New Road. This “master of quiet beauty” (FADER) makes her Walt Disney Concert Hall headline debut following the release of her latest album, Luminescent Creatures.

Since Ichiko Aoba's 2010 debut, Razorblade Maiden, the Japanese singer-songwriter-multi-instrumentalist has released seven albums, founded her independent label hermine, has performed in a  growing list of territories worldwide. Her music, often composed on just her classical guitar or a simple synthesizer, is simultaneously intimate and boundless; fragile and unyielding; virtuosic and understated. 

Her seventh album, Windswept Adan (2020) introduced lush orchestral arrangements to create a "soundtrack for a fictional film" that took the world by storm. From TikTok to internet music forums, Windswept Adan revealed the breadth of Ichiko Aoba's worldwide appeal. Yet her live performances are often stripped down affairs - guitar and voice, unadorned - that still manage to captivate and enthrall audiences.
