"The Fantastic" is the theme of this season's chamber concerts in the Apollosaal, based on the season's first opera premiere, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann . Musicians of the Staatskapelle Berlin have developed programs that approach this idea and concept, which play a key role in music, in a variety of ways. Ranging from the Baroque to the present day, with a special focus on the Romantic period, "The Fantastic" will be explored with a variety of chamber music works in diverse ensembles.

Composed to acknowledge an honorary degree despite not attending university, a mischievous Brahms penned the tongue-in-cheek Academic Festival Overture, featuring boisterous student drinking songs. Reinecke’s Concerto in E minor spotlights the harp in a virtuosic display of shimmering arpeggios and rhythmic optimism. The forced optimism of Symphony No. 5, glorifying Stalin’s regime, proved both career- and lifesaving for Shostakovich.

"Clara, today I was in bliss. During the rehearsal, a symphony by Franz Schubert was played. If only you had been there. It is indescribable. It's like human voices... like a novel in four volumes..." This was written by Robert Schumann to his future wife after an orchestral rehearsal in Leipzig. To this day, this symphony is considered a masterpiece of its genre. Impressive not only for its length of almost an hour, but above all musically, it encompasses everything that continues to captivate classical music audiences. Starting with the solemn beginning of the horns, through grand musical arcs and captivating melodies, all the way to the sophisticated use of instruments. Sophisticated and impressive is also the flute, specifically in the flute concerto of the 19th century. Composed by the former conductor of the Gewandhaus, it is performed by Kathrin Bäz, the principal flutist of the Dresden Philharmonic."

Chamber music by a Hungarian composer who remains underappreciated to this day. Unlike Bartók and Kodály, Dohnányi remained committed to Romanticism throughout his life. His sonorous Piano Quintet and Sextet captivate with their inventiveness. They are a discovery, as is the uniquely scored Trio by the German Romantic composer Reinecke. Dohnányi was a pianist, conductor, and composer, and in his youth, as a celebrated soloist, he was compared to Franz Liszt. He therefore had a particularly fortunate touch when it came to piano chamber music, as can be experienced in this concert. As a composer, Dohnányi saw himself firmly in the tradition of Brahms. His late Sextet, however, transcends the world of Brahms and simultaneously revels in the broad stylistic panorama of the 1930s.

Schwarz-Weiß? Farbe! 2015 gewann er den Münchner ARD-Musikwettbewerb, und seine Karriere als Solist, Kammer- und Orchestermusiker nahm ihren steilen Verlauf: Sébastian Jacot, 1987 in Genf geboren, war nach einer Zwischenstation im Leipziger Gewandhausorchester seit 2022 einer der beiden Solo-Flötisten der Berliner Philharmoniker. Bei uns brilliert er mit gleich zwei Konzerten - mit La Notte von Vivaldi, der darin nächtliche Geister weckt, sowie mit dem spielfreudigen Konzert des deutschen Spätromantikers Carl Reinecke. Am Pult: die 1988 in Saarbrücken geborene Dirigentin Ruth Reinhardt, die vor allem in den USA, aber auch in Europa schon große Karriere machte. Ganz nebenbei ist sie seit 2020 auch Saarlandbotschafterin. Brahms und Hindemith zählen zu ihren Favoriten. Und die dirigiert sie auch bei uns. Deshalb erklingt zum Abschluss Hindemiths großartige Mathis-Symphonie, inspiriert von den opulenten Tafelbildern des Isenheimer Altars. Schwarz-Weiß? Farbe!

Born in Hamburg in 1824 (200 years ago!), Reinecke had a precocious start as a piano prodigy. He associated with the greatest composers of his time, including Schumann, Mendelssohn, Liszt, and Brahms. He enjoyed a brilliant career in Leipzig as a conductor, piano teacher, and composer. Reinecke also attracted promising students like Grieg, Janáček, Albéniz, and Bruch. The musicians of the OPRL (Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège) are paying tribute to this master of German Romanticism, particularly recognizing his significant contributions to wind instruments.

Students perform a variety of selections that they have studied with faculty during the semester. Immerse yourself in the exquisite world of chamber music with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, presenting a captivating Chamber Concert series. This musical journey unfolds over two enchanting evenings, starting on Saturday, 23rd March 2024, at 8:00 pm in the historic Max Joseph Saal of the Munich Residence, followed by a Sunday performance on 24th March 2024, at 6:00 pm at the serene Tutzing, Evangelische Akademie.

The program promises an auditory feast, featuring a selection of masterpieces that span the breadth of chamber music. The evening begins with Ludwig van Beethoven's Trio für zwei Oboen und Englisch Horn C-Dur, op.87, followed by Francis Poulenc's Sonate pour deux clarinettes, FP 7, and Sándor Veress's Sonatina für Oboe, Klarinette und Fagott 1931. After an interval, the concert resumes with Carl Reinecke's Sonate e-moll Undine für Fl. u. Klav., op.167, Camille Saint-Saëns's Caprice sur des Airs Danois et Russes für Flöte, Oboe, Klarinette und Klavier, op. 79, and concludes with Francis Poulenc's Trio für Oboe, Fagott und Klavier.

The performances will showcase the talents of renowned musicians, including Ivanna Ternay on flute, Stefan Schilli and Melanie Jessica Rothman on oboe, Tobias Vogelmann on English horn, Christopher Patrick Corbett and Heinrich Treydte on clarinet, Jesús Villa Ordóñez on bassoon, and Lukas Maria Kuen on piano. Please note, due to illness in the ensemble, the program and participants have undergone changes.

There are two milestone quintets featured in this program by Mozart and Beethoven respectively, referencing one another both in their scoring and key signatures. After the premiere of his Quintet, Mozart wrote to his father saying ‘I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.’ With extensive sketches in existence for this piece, it was clearly a project Mozart had laboured over – surprising for a composer not usually known for rewriting material. Beethoven takes his lead from Mozart in his youthful Quintet, written in his twenties when he was exploring the sonic possibilities of instruments in a chamber setting. We’re also presented with two trios in this concert, one by the French neoclassical composer Jean Françaix and another lively offering by the German Romantic composer Reinecke.
