Internationally acclaimed mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard returns to star as Rosina along with baritone Emmett O’Hanlon as the street-smart matchmaker Figaro. Rossini’s beloved score (filled with delightful earworms) is conducted by Louis Lohraseb, fresh from his triumphant Tosca in 2022. Best of all, experience this colorful comedy in a new-to-Los Angeles production by Tony- and Emmy-winning director and choreographer Rob Ashford. With scissors as sharp as his wits, the cunning barber Figaro is the go-to neighborhood trickster capable of solving any problem. When Count Almaviva finds himself smitten with the charming and clever Rosina, Almaviva knows exactly who to call to help him out. Through disguises and distractions, schemes and subterfuge, Figaro and Almaviva team up to outwit the dastardly Dr. Bartolo who would have Rosina—and her large fortune—for his own.

The 2022–2023 Long Center Season opens in November with Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, a witty tale of bribery, deception, disguise, and of course, true love. With all the essential components of the best comic operas, Barber drops us into a forbidden love story between the rich-nobleman-disguised-as-poor-student Count Almaviva and the vivacious-but-orphaned Rosina, as they try to work out how to escape from the grasping hands of her cantankerous guardian, Dr. Bartolo. To solve the problem, in steps the wiliest of sidekicks, local barber and handyman Figaro, who plots and schemes with the young couple to make sure that true love triumphs in the end, though only after numerous mischievous escapades and near-misses.
