Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers, a Grammy Award winner and “Wonder Woman of commissioning” (The Strad), is a returning Festival favorite celebrated for her stunning performances and collaborations with today’s foremost composers. She is joined by Grammy‑winning guitarist Jason Vieaux, praised by NPR as “perhaps the most precise and soulful classical guitarist of his generation” and admired for his vibrant, expressive artistry.

Meet the Musician: Anne Akiko Meyers and Jason Vieaux

GRAMMY® Award-winning violinist Anne Akiko Meyers has earned the title “the Wonder Woman of Commissioning” from The Strad due to her relentless advocacy for many of today’s most influential living composers. Her collaboration with Michael Daugherty on the violin concerto Blue Electra, commissioned by her, powerfully reflects the extraordinary life and enigmatic disappearance of aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart. Critically acclaimed conductor Carl St. Clair returns to “pilot” a compelling journey that intertwines the themes of flight and fate, featuring Tchaikovsky’s commanding Symphony No. 4.

Our opening concert, “Made in America,” will showcase Grammy Award-winning violinist Anne Akiko Meyers in Barber’s Violin Concerto—one of the great lyrical American classical concertos, complete with technical fireworks. The orchestra will be featured in Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances, his final symphonic work written entirely in America and premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra. We open with Dvořák’s Carnival Overture, written just before Dvořák traveled abroad from Prague to live in the US to teach in New York City. This overture was seen as both a farewell to his native country and as a hello to New York.

Winner of the 2024 Latin Grammy for Best Classical Contemporary Composition, Fandango is a love letter to the Spanish dance and its New World progeny written for violinist Anne Akiko Meyers. “The Concerto itself is a rainforest of impossible challenges. Yet Anne Akiko Meyers, for whom the work was written, soared through this jungle, her 1741 Guarneri del Gesù violin jumping, bouncing, playing the frequent high registers with operatic facility” (ConcertoNet.com). Márquez’s irresistible Danzón No. 2 kicks things off on a lively note.
