Internationally acclaimed for their “fearless, yet probingly beautiful” (The Strad) performances, the Grammy-winning Parker Quartet joins clarinetist Todd Palmer in a program that opens with Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet and culminates with Copland’s picturesque Appalachian Spring. This Copland masterpiece, which was performed on the opening night of the Shalin Liu Performance Center, returns to the stage in commemoration of the 15th anniversary of that momentous event.

Bringing our milestone 50th season to a spectacular end, the Dover Quartet, violist Ida Kavafian, and cellist Peter Stumpf play Schoenberg’s soaring tone poem Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night), which takes its inspiration from a poem about the transformative power of compassion and understanding, and pianist Haochen Zhang and bassist Edgar Meyer join members of the Dover Quartet for what’s arguably the most-loved work in the chamber music repertoire: Schubert’s Trout Quintet.

Bassist Edgar Meyer—hailed by The New Yorker as “the most remarkable virtuoso” in the history of his instrument—joins the Dover Quartet for his own bluegrass-, folk-, and jazz-influenced Quintet. The program also features the Dover Quartet playing Haydn’s stately Emperor Quartet (originally written for the last Holy Roman Emperor) and pianist Haochen Zhang, violinist Ida Kavafian, and cellist Peter Stumpf performing Brahms’s gorgeous Piano Trio in B Major.

The Dover Quartet makes their first Festival appearance of the season playing George Walker’s String Quartet No. 1—a gripping early work by the pioneering, Pulitzer Prize–winning composer—and Schubert’s dramatic Rosamunde Quartet, whose second movement is based on a theme from Schubert’s incidental music for the play Rosamunde.

The Dover Quartet returns to Caramoor with charismatic classical saxophonist, composer, and 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant winner Steven Banks. In addition to Banks’ recent quintet, the program includes string quartets by Haydn, known as the “Father” of the form, William Grant Still, one of the foremost African American composers of the 20th century, and Dvořák, noted for employing the idioms of the folk music of Moravia and his native Bohemia in his works.

The Rolston String Quartet – Luri Lee (violin), Jason Issokson (violin), Hezekiah Leung (viola), and Peter Eom (cello) – was formed in 2013 during a summer chamber music residency at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Banff, Alberta. It takes its name from Canadian violinist Thomas Rolston, founder and longtime director of the Banff Centre’s Music and Sound Programs. First-prize winner of the 2016 Banff International String Quartet Competition, and the 2018 recipient and first international ensemble chosen for Chamber Music America's prestigious Cleveland Quartet Award, the quartet continues to receive acclamation and recognition for musical excellence.

Luri Lee plays a Carlo Tononi violin, generously on loan from Shauna Rolston Shaw. The Rolston String Quartet is endorsed by Jagar Strings of Denmark.
