A full 22 years lie between the premieres of Johannes Brahms's two piano concertos. Compositionally, he was still in his infancy when, in 1854, he orchestrated a now-lost sonata for two pianos, first transforming it into a symphony and then into a piano concerto. "Terrible, heavy, and grand," he prophesied to Clara Schumann in a letter. He worked on the work for two more years, which premiered in Hanover in 1859. Its groundbreaking quality was only recognized years later.
