Wotan's union with Erda produced nine daughters, the Valkyries, who would assist war heroes in battle and escort the fallen to Valhalla to eternal bliss. Among them, Wotan's favorite child is Brünnhilde. But the gods are in danger from Alberich, who is waiting for the recovery of the power-giving ring. To accomplish his revenge on Wotan, he fathered an unborn son, which is why the father of the gods himself has to strive with all his might to regain the ring that he had to give to the giants for the construction of the gods' castle.
