With "The Seven Last Words of Our Savior on the Cross," Joseph Haydn created one of his most profound and moving works. Originally composed as an orchestral arrangement for the Good Friday liturgy, the music later unfolded its haunting effect in versions for string quartet, piano, and choir. In seven slow movements, Haydn translates Jesus' last words into sounds of deep devotion, pain, and hope—a musicalmasterpiece about suffering, hope, and redemption. Or to put it another way: seven times goosebumps before the curtain falls.
