Which wind instrument has the greatest range of expression, can squeal like a tram on rusty rails (Carl Nielsen) or creep into the heart as in Mozart's last solo concerto for, yes, precisely the clarinet.

The clarinet also sent Beethoven and Brahms into ecstasy, but here at this portrait concert, the Ensemble's new clarinetist, Frederik von Würden, shows that there are other and more expressions in the diverse Clarinet. Monet blue and other pastel colors by Debussy, classical-sounding chamber music by Mel Bonis, the great romantic sound in Paul Juon's trio, the completely modern, where all the outer limits of the clarinet are almost blown up in a solo sonata by Denisov and the oriental tone language by Katchaturian.

An intriguing combination of works written by well-known composers when they were in their twenties begins with a Debussy suite which includes Clair de lune, one of the most famous musical pieces of all time, followed by NCMF Artistic Director Clive Greensmith performing Dobrinka Tabakova’s charming arrangement of Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata.

 

Shostakovich’s acerbic wit and seriousness are then on full display in incidental music he wrote for “the most scandalous production (of Hamlet) in the history of Shakespeare,” presented here as a theatrical collaboration with local actors.

Debussy’s luminous orchestrations propel the drama to ecstatic heights, the music a striking contrast to this lean new production by Dutch director Jetske Mijnssen.

With his vast and profoundly explorative approach to repertoire, as well as extraordinary technical facility, the American virtuoso has long been established as one of the greatest pianists of our time, able to encompass not only the established repertoire but a wide range of more unusual musical material which he has consistently championed. ‘What a sound!’, exclaimed The Seattle Times. ‘Ohlsson is famous for that sonority, though he never seems to be working very hard to produce it … an incredible technique with razor-sharp accuracy.’ His programme includes a recent piece by an increasingly prominent young Australian composer whose work Garrick Ohlsson has taken up.

As the San Francisco Chronicle suggested of a recent Das Lied von der Erde, ‘anytime you add Cooke into the mix, there’s a whole new level of magic involved. She brings an extraordinary wealth of tonal colour to a performance, as well as a degree of emotional intensity that can be almost unnerving in its focus’. Her programme culminates in a cycle setting texts written by Cooke and her husband and which the singer premièred in the US in February.

Each year, through its festivals, masterclasses and other public events, the Kronberg Academy offers all-round musical training for exceptionally talented young string players. The results are on display here, with some of the most promising artists of their generation performing a wide range of pieces from the chamber repertoire. The morning concert features a range of major duo sonatas from the Viennese classical period – Mozart’s 1778 violin work written in Mannheim, Beethoven’s final cello masterpiece of 1815 – and the early 20th Century in the first of Debussy’s late, wartime chamber works, comprise the programme.

The evening performance includes Debussy’s late violin sonata (1917) – part of an unfinished project of six, of which just three were completed – preceding two outstanding piano trios: Schumann’s 1851 work, and Beethoven’s masterly ‘Archduke’ (1811).

Debussy gazed at the waves of the English channel, and saw – and heard – a thousand glowing colours. Isolated and ill, the exiled Bartók wrote a piano concerto for his beloved wife, and created rhythms that dance for joy. And in our own time, Unsuk Chin gazes into the infinite and finds a star that pulses in time with the human heart. 

That’s actually true: Chin’s wondrous new orchestral work takes its cue both from Korean court music and the curiously human rhythm of the star Alaraph. It’s an unforgettable opening to conductor Dinis Sousa’s nature-inspired debut with the BBC SO: and with the 'remarkable' (Guardian) French pianist Bertrand Chamayou also appearing for the first time with the BBC SO, there’ll be a regular constellation of stars in alignment tonight. The concert closes with the insistent rhythms and drama of Ravel’s Boléro.

Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique is widely regarded as the first important symphonic poem, complete with shepherd’s pipes, a dance, a “March to the Scaffold,” a beheading, a “Witches’ Sabbath,” and more for sharp-eared listeners. FWSO Music Director Robert Spano serves as guide on this exploration of Berlioz’s psyche, which follows Debussy’s hazy Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Schumann’s Cello Concerto with FWSO Principal Cellist Allan Steele.

Both Brahms and Debussy’s piano trios are distinguished by the sheer beauty of their melodies. Brahms often saved his most intimate musical thoughts for his chamber music. The late C minor trio has a dark autumnal beauty. In contrast the Debussy sparkles with varying light and shade. A short work by Lithuanian composer Bronius Kutavičius completes the programme.

Four varied works from the young British-Chinese violinist, who enjoys a busy international career. Nikolai Myaskovsky (1881-1950) was the oldest student in class when he started conducting in St. Petersburg in 1906. He got a friend for life in the youngest student, Sergei Prokofiev, who later traveled to the West and strongly contributed to Myaskovsky becoming one of the most famous soviet composers during the Interwar Period.

Hailed as a pianists’ pianist, internationally renowned pianist and pedagogue Boris Berman presents an exquisite program of Schubert and Debussy. On the occasion of the James Ensor year, Casco Phil is browsing through the colorful repertoire for woodwind quintet. Ensor himself prided himself on the fact that many contemporaries shared his sensitivity to colors with none other than Claude Debussy, the founder of musical impressionism. The interweaving of sound and color turned out to be a sign of the times: just as Ensor was inspired by shades of color and light, a whole generation of French composers became fascinated by the contrast between light and dark. Milhaud and Taffanel, among others, managed to utilize the wide sound diversity of a woodwind collective. The trend was also picked up on the Flemish side: Frédéric Devreese composed his James Ensor Suite as the ultimate tribute to the Ostend master. From delicate melodies to richly varied textures, be moved by the splendor of this enchanting music in the intimate setting of the Predikherenkerk.

“Indeed, I’m ready to put them on a level with some of the greatest piano duos of our time…They have to be heard to be believed” said the Washington Post of Christina and Michelle Naughton. They have captivated audiences throughout the globe with the unity created by their mystical communication, as reported by the Wall Street Journal, in Christina’s own words, “There are times I forget we are two people playing together.” The Naughtons’ work as a duo was recognized in 2019 as they became the first piano duo to receive the Avery Fisher Career Grant presented by Lincoln Center.

The Italian-Dutch pianist won the Salzburg International Mozart Competition in 2016 and the following year made her debut at Vienna’s Musikverein. Of her recording of Liszt’s Harmonies poétiques et religieuses, BBC Music Magazine wrote: ‘Giorgini’s affinity with this reflective music is evident from the outset … Her shaping of climaxes demonstrates complete control of pace and dynamics’.
