The Morgenstern Quartet, which has continuously enriched Rostock's chamber music scene since 1987, will open the season's chamber concert series. For many years, the ensemble has devoted itself particularly to the string quartets of Dmitri Shostakovich. Shostakovich wrote Quartet No. 8, composed in Ghorisch near Dresden, in 1945, under the impression of the devastated Dresden, in memory of the victims of fascism and war. At the same time, with its tonal monogram D-E-flat-C-H, it is also considered one of the composer's most personal works. Shostakovich dedicated his 15th and final quartet, composed almost 20 years later, to his friend Sergei Zhirinsky, cellist of the Moscow Beethoven Quartet, who had suddenly passed away.
