Ivan could have been an artist. But he's been managing a country estate for years. One day, his brother-in-law, Alexander, a formerly successful film director whom he supports financially, moves in. Meanwhile, Ivan's niece, Sonia, is deeply in love with the country doctor, who, however, only has eyes for Helena—Alexander's second wife. In their self-pity, they all believe themselves alone. Yet they are more alike than they think. Then a shot rings out.
Unfulfilled hopes and dreams, unrequited love—"Vanya" shows how unhappy life can be... and how heartbreakingly funny. The play lovingly reveals how ridiculous we sometimes are, yet makes you feel sorry for us, share in our hopes and tears.
