Elena Denisova (violin) and conductor Alexei Kornienko present an afternoon of magical sound with their Gustav Mahler Ensemble. The performance includes Gustav Mahler's rarely performed Quartet Movement in A minor (arr. Pavel Singer), Franz Schubert's Rondo in A major D. 438, a chorale by Maximilian Kreuz, Alexander Zemlinsky's Serenade (arr. Franz Hummel), and Igor Stravinsky's Suite Pulcinella. The ensemble captivates with its chamber music depth and orchestral refinement. Johannes Brahms and Anton Bruckner – contemporaries, compositional geniuses, and yet polar opposites. Both composers came from the same generation, yet their conceptions of music could hardly have been more different. While Brahms conceived of music as a formally defined absolute, as an expression of personal, primal feeling – detached from any romanticism – Bruckner turned to a predominantly transcendent dimension: for him, music was a medium of the sacred, a mirror of the divine, a creation that places humanity within a larger context.
