Pianist

The 2023–24 season opens in grand style with Liszt’s fanciful, flashy Piano Concerto No. 1, the perfect showcase for the electrifying Zhang Zuo (Zee Zee), and Mussorgsky’s masterpiece Pictures at an Exhibition, depicted in Ravel’s evocative orchestrations. Maestro Gomez’s fascinating exploration of the late Robert Muczynski’s music continues with the first-ever performance of Galena: A Town, a tribute to the historic city in the composer’s native Illinois.

Friday’s concert will be presented with a new atmosphere: intermission-free with on-stage introductions to the music and your chance to ask questions of the artists in a post-concert Q&A. If you want to know more about the music as it’s happening, Friday is the concert for you! For the selections presented on Friday’s concert, look for the lemon slice: 

Sunday’s concert will be preceded by Concert Comments, a pre-concert talk, beginning at 1:00 p.m., and will have a usual intermission.

Pianist Zee Zee (Zhang Zuo) gives a recital inspired by myths, fairy tales, and Romantic literature. On the first half is Ravel’s grim and virtuosic tryptic Gaspard de la nuit, as well as Ma mère l’Oye, a suite as simple and precious as a book of nursery rhymes. On the second half, Zee Zee plays selections from Liszt’s musical travelogues Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage), featured on her recent Decca Classics album.
