Inspired by autobiographical accounts of the incarceration of Japanese-American citizens in World War II, Lost Freedom: A Memory weaves together music and spoken word in a profound exploration of a chilling time in American history. Actor, author, and activist, George Takei (Star Trek), narrates his own story as one of the citizens forced from their homes and made to live in desolate camps thousands of miles away. Set to music by Oregon composer Kenji Bunch, this poignant program will also include music by Oregon’s Japanese-American composer/percussionist Andy Akiho.

In this encore performance, we pay tribute to the life and legacy of runner Steve Prefontaine, paired with David Schiff’s Stomp: Re-Lit and two chamber pieces.

The audience at the June 2022 premiere of Oregon composer David Schiff’s PREFONTAINE was thrilled and moved to tears, so we are proud to present this encore performance as we celebrate the life and legacy of legendary runner Steve Prefontaine. At the top of the program, we’ll hear another of Schiff’s works, Stomp: Re-Lit, a tribute to the Soul music legend James Brown. In between, Francesco will play harpsichord as he and the orchestra accompany two of his favorite musicians with whom to collaborate: harpist Chloe Tula in George Frideric Handel’s blissful Harp Concerto and Concertmaster Searmi Park in Antonio Vivaldi’s bustling Violin Concerto.

Internationally acclaimed violinist Yura Lee brings elegance and expressive clarity to this intimate Soreng Chamber Series program, leading from the violin. La Follia ignites fiery variations and the dazzling Concertmaster Searmi Park joins as soloist for the Concerto for Two Violins. The program culminates in Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, alive with color, contrast, and Baroque vitality, where in the Soreng’s close acoustic, every storm feels vivid and every birdsong immediate.
