Since forming in 2010, Neave Trio – violinist Anna Williams, cellist Mikhail Veselov, and pianist Eri Nakamura – has earned enormous praise for its engaging, cutting­edge performances. WQXR explains, “‘Neave’ is actually a Gaelic name meaning ‘bright’ and ‘radiant,’ both of which certainly apply to this trio's music making.” The group’s 2019 album Her Voice, on Chandos Records, was named one of the best recordings of the year by both The New York Times and BBC Radio 3. The Boston Musical Intelligencer reports, “it is inconceivable that they will not soon be among the busiest chamber ensembles going,” and “their unanimity, communication, variety of touch, and expressive sensibility rate first tier.”

This innovative piece draws inspiration from two distinct sources: the Andean concept of Pachamama, the earth goddess revered in indigenous South American cultures, and Beethoven’s iconic "Ode to Joy" from his Ninth Symphony. Frank masterfully weaves these influences together, creating a work that celebrates the interconnectedness of nature and humanity. Fanny Hensel (née Mendelssohn) and Louise Farrenc had everything they needed to reach the forefront of music history: an art-loving family, early musical support, sufficient financial means and, last but not least, enviable talent. There was only one thing they both lacked: the right gender. Fanny, just as brilliant a child prodigy as Felix, bowed for a long time to the will of her younger brother, who was convinced of the then common cliché that women were only capable of composing small, lyrical pieces. However, they lacked the strength for the supreme disciplines such as the string quartet or the symphony. Fanny Hensel's only string quartet, published in the 20th century, is a romantic masterpiece that proves her brother wrong. Louise Farrenc achieved great renown in 19th century Paris as a pianist, composer, and even as a conductor and professor. After her death, she was forgotten and was only rediscovered in the 1980s as part of gender research. Farrenc's string quintet is an arrangement of her popular nonet, which achieved a high level of fame outside France. The occasion on which Farrenc created the string-only version and whether it was ever performed remains a mystery. In addition to these two European women, two contemporary American composers are also in focus: Gabriela Lena Frank, born in California, traces her own roots in her works, which are fed by Peruvian-Chinese-Lithuanian-Jewish influences. In her work "Leyendas," she mixes elements of western classical and Andean folk music traditions. Jessie Montgomery has become a strong voice in American music in the 21st century through her artistic use of improvisation, poetry, and social awareness in her music. One of her latest works will have its premiere in this program.

Founded in 2017, the Reverón Piano Trio has quickly established itself as one of the most important chamber music ensembles from Latin America. Its members share a true passion in the performance of works by Latin American composers whose main goal is to introduce audiences to their rich repertoire of contemporary and standard works. These seasoned artists, all Venezuelan but now residing in the U.S., are active promoters of Latin American music through their work as scholars and entrepreneurs, and they have devoted their careers to the discovery, cataloging, performance, editing, and recording of this repertoire along with commissioning new works. Recent collaborations include La Hamaca (2021) and El Ventilador (2022), written for the trio by Venezuelan-American composer Ricardo Lorenz, and the world premiere of Barroqueada (2020) by Grammy-nominated composer Miguel del Águila.

Be the first to experience a brand new concerto by Gabriela Lena Frank, heralded as one of the most significant women composers in history by the Washington Post. Kachkaniraqmi (“I Still Exist”) was commissioned by the Festival and will be performed by Boulder’s Grammy-winning Takács Quartet as ensemble-soloist alongside the Orchestra. After intermission, Joan Tower’s brilliant Concerto for Orchestra allows for great moments of individual virtuosity, but ultimately it is the entire Orchestra that shines. “I had imagined a long and large landscape that had a feeling of space and distance,” Tower says of her Concerto for Orchestra, in which the music “travels a long road.” This program celebrates three generations of women composers and opens with Florence Price’s Adoration, originally conceived for solo organ and performed here in its stunning arrangement for strings.

Acclaimed by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune “as a performer of scintillating energy and imagination…with a fearless, fiery quality,” Aspen alumna Joyce Yang returns for Falla’s Night in the Gardens of Spain. Not quite a piano concerto, the piece can be seen as musical tribute to the composer’s beloved Andalusia. You’ll hear influences of flamenco, guitar, and in Falla’s words, “melancholy and mystery.” The concert begins with a short prayer and “serenade to the past” by Gabriela Lena Frank, inspired by the composer’s visit with her mother to the site in Peru where the Spanish defeated the Inca Empire.

The GRAMMY-nominated Cuban composer and pianist Alfredo Rodríguez joins Nu Deco for a first-time collaborative performance. The Quincy Jones collaborator and Miami resident is set to ignite the Lincoln Road stage for this special finale. This captivating musical journey will also feature Leonard Bernstein’s sizzling “On the Town,” the enchanting “Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout” by contemporary composer Gabriela Lena Frank, and an exclusive Nu Deco original.

A veritable United Nations of cellists, the Galvin Quartet combines musicians from China, Brazil, South Korea, and the United States. Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari taps into folk music from the Huichol people, and the ASO presents a world-premiere by Atlanta’s own Joel Thompson, an Emmy-winning composer working at the intersection of art and social justice. The concert includes a musical travelogue by Gabriela Lena Frank and the snappy Danzón No. 2 by Arturo Márquez. French pianist Cédric Tiberghien makes his ASO debut.

Music of Heaven and Earth. Music Director Rei Hotoda’s exploration of the symphonies of Gustav Mahler continues with his Fourth Symphony.  This delightful evocation of childhood innocence was strongly influenced by Schubertian lyricism and German folk poetry. It culminates in a song for soprano describing a child’s view of Heaven.  The devastation of nature from California’s recent spate of wildfires is the subject of Gabriela Lena Frank’s moving 2021 work Contested Eden.

The State of California and the Bay Area itself has a unique ecosystem all its own with not only famous living composers residing and working here but their students tend to stay in the area and become well known which has led to generations of California taught and residing fabulous composers. They often use subject matter and musical inspirations are taken from their lives here, including the environment and nature which leave enough of a mark on them that when they leave they still paint the picture of what it is like to live in this great state. The piece we are featuring on this program by composer Ben Shirley does exactly that.  Ben Shirley was a student of Gabriela Lena Frank at the GLF Creative Academy of Music in Boonville, CA and his work High Sierra Sonata evokes the Eastern Sierra Mountains and the perseverance of runners who participate in high altitude running.  Ben is also a participant in the GLF "Composing Earth" project dedicated to the study of climate change, was a student at the San Francisco Conservatory of music and is a marathon runner featured in the film "Skid Row Marathon"

But Frida refuses to return to the world that caused her so much pain, until another departed soul inspires her to look back at the art (and the man) she once loved.

Resident Conductor Lina González-Granados commands a cast packed with international talent, including Daniela Mack, Alfredo Daza and Ana María Martínez in this tribute to one of the most pivotal romances in history. The artists‘ own emblematic paintings merge with a folklore-inspired score to breathe new life into the love-hate saga of Frida and Diego.

Originally titled by the composer as "Recollections of Country Life,” Beethoven’s beloved “Pastoral” symphony musically depicts an idyllic landscape. Gabriela Lena Frank’s Conquest Requiem is inspired by the true story of Malinche, a Nahua woman from the Gulf Coast of Mexico who was given to the Spaniards as a young slave, with text by Pulitzer-Prize winning author Nilo Cruz.

The Latin Jazz Network raves: “You can now declare Magos Herrera to be one of the greatest contemporary interpreters of song.” Possessing one of the most expressive, spellbinding voices on today’s music scene, she is a force in the jazz world. Her eloquent vocal improvisations and bold style connect elements of contemporary jazz and Latin American melodies, blending genre and language boundaries. Personally, Magos is a champion of women’s causes, and on a recent recording she explored the question of finding communion in a time of isolation. One of the greatest pianists and composers of his generation, Sergei Rachmaninoff was on the verge of collapse after the poor reception of his first Symphony, and spiraled into depression. Inconsolable, he was unable to write any music for three years, until his therapist helped him to begin work on his magnificent Piano Concerto No. 2. It saved his career and most probably his life. Hearing this work performed live is an overwhelming experience of nostalgic passion, soaring melody, and uncontrollable excitement.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the ever-evolving Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble in its first concert of the season. Hear the Serenade for Winds in E-flat Major, a sweet and warmly scored early work by a teenaged Richard Strauss. Gabriela Lena Frank’s Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout follows, mixing elements from Western classical and Andean folk music traditions into a riveting whole. The winners of the 2021 Fischoff Competition and the 2022 Concert Artists Guild Competition showcase the versatility of the cello quartet with music of different periods and contrasting styles and characters. From Vivaldi to Piazolla, the first half of the program journeys through works written for chamber orchestras, operas and virtuosic showpieces, redesigned for the cello quartet. As a unique ensemble that does not have the standardized repertoire of string quartets, the ensemble presents a rare opportunity to create and commission new works by composers of varying backgrounds, in this case Zhou Tian. The Andean Walkabout by Gabriela Lena Frank is the crux of the second half. Leyendas, with its American, Chinese and South American influences, encompasses many of the backgrounds and ideals of the quartet’s members.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra welcomes the debut of Russian conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya, music director of the Chicago Opera Theater, as she leads the ASO in the suite from Prokofiev’s ballet masterpiece Romeo and Juliet. A work that brings out the full range of this virtuoso ensemble, the music moves from bellicose furor to aching poignancy with some white-knuckle violin playing in between. The concert includes Gabriela Lena Frank’s stirring Elegía Andina, a piece that mixes strains of Peruvian folk song with contemporary sounds to highlight the composer’s multicultural heritage. The program opens with Amjad Ali Khan’s Samaagam, featuring Khan, master of the sarod, and his family of acclaimed artists from the Indian classical music tradition.
