The festival kicks off at 10 AM with String Masterclasses, where student musicians will perform under the guidance of renowned artists Robyn Bollinger, Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt, and Peter Stumpf. This unique setup allows the audience to meander through the sessions, gaining insights into the intricate process of music-making.

At 2 PM, the festival takes a deep dive into the Power of Folklore with Jin Kim, a pivotal figure in the LCCMF community and father of Artistic Director Soovin Kim. Jin Kim will share personal anecdotes and the influence of Korean folk traditions on his family and American culture, offering a profound perspective on intercultural communication.

The highlight of the day, a SPOTLIGHT CONCERT at 3:30 PM, titled "Stories from South America," promises an enchanting hour of music, photography, and poetry. This concert will feature the works of Amerindian photographer Martín Chambi, Argentinian poet María Negroni, and the composers inspired by them, alongside traditional folk melodies and dances reimagined by Alberto Ginastera. Be the first to experience a brand new concerto by Gabriela Lena Frank, heralded as one of the most significant women composers in history by the Washington Post. Kachkaniraqmi (“I Still Exist”) was commissioned by the Festival and will be performed by Boulder’s Grammy-winning Takács Quartet as ensemble-soloist alongside the Orchestra. After intermission, Joan Tower’s brilliant Concerto for Orchestra allows for great moments of individual virtuosity, but ultimately it is the entire Orchestra that shines. “I had imagined a long and large landscape that had a feeling of space and distance,” Tower says of her Concerto for Orchestra, in which the music “travels a long road.” This program celebrates three generations of women composers and opens with Florence Price’s Adoration, originally conceived for solo organ and performed here in its stunning arrangement for strings.

Acclaimed by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune “as a performer of scintillating energy and imagination…with a fearless, fiery quality,” Aspen alumna Joyce Yang returns for Falla’s Night in the Gardens of Spain. Not quite a piano concerto, the piece can be seen as musical tribute to the composer’s beloved Andalusia. You’ll hear influences of flamenco, guitar, and in Falla’s words, “melancholy and mystery.” The concert begins with a short prayer and “serenade to the past” by Gabriela Lena Frank, inspired by the composer’s visit with her mother to the site in Peru where the Spanish defeated the Inca Empire.

Music of Heaven and Earth. Music Director Rei Hotoda’s exploration of the symphonies of Gustav Mahler continues with his Fourth Symphony.  This delightful evocation of childhood innocence was strongly influenced by Schubertian lyricism and German folk poetry. It culminates in a song for soprano describing a child’s view of Heaven.  The devastation of nature from California’s recent spate of wildfires is the subject of Gabriela Lena Frank’s moving 2021 work Contested Eden.

The State of California and the Bay Area itself has a unique ecosystem all its own with not only famous living composers residing and working here but their students tend to stay in the area and become well known which has led to generations of California taught and residing fabulous composers. They often use subject matter and musical inspirations are taken from their lives here, including the environment and nature which leave enough of a mark on them that when they leave they still paint the picture of what it is like to live in this great state. The piece we are featuring on this program by composer Ben Shirley does exactly that.  Ben Shirley was a student of Gabriela Lena Frank at the GLF Creative Academy of Music in Boonville, CA and his work High Sierra Sonata evokes the Eastern Sierra Mountains and the perseverance of runners who participate in high altitude running.  Ben is also a participant in the GLF "Composing Earth" project dedicated to the study of climate change, was a student at the San Francisco Conservatory of music and is a marathon runner featured in the film "Skid Row Marathon"

Originally titled by the composer as "Recollections of Country Life,” Beethoven’s beloved “Pastoral” symphony musically depicts an idyllic landscape. Gabriela Lena Frank’s Conquest Requiem is inspired by the true story of Malinche, a Nahua woman from the Gulf Coast of Mexico who was given to the Spaniards as a young slave, with text by Pulitzer-Prize winning author Nilo Cruz.

The Latin Jazz Network raves: “You can now declare Magos Herrera to be one of the greatest contemporary interpreters of song.” Possessing one of the most expressive, spellbinding voices on today’s music scene, she is a force in the jazz world. Her eloquent vocal improvisations and bold style connect elements of contemporary jazz and Latin American melodies, blending genre and language boundaries. Personally, Magos is a champion of women’s causes, and on a recent recording she explored the question of finding communion in a time of isolation. Left Coast explores the voices of women composers of California in song, both historical and contemporary, ranging from Elinor Remick Warren and Carrie Jacobs-Bond to Vivian Fung, Addie Camsuzou and Gabriela Lena Frank. Works for piano by Gabriella Smith and Henry Cowell complement the program which spans more than a century of Californian music.

As part of the California Festival, La Jolla Presbyterian Church Concert Series presents the innovative San Diego-based chamber ensemble, Camarada. Deeply influenced by the rich tradition of Argentinian music, Camarada will perform a captivating program to include two recently commissioned ensemble pieces by Argentinian-born composer Andrés Martín, and an outstanding solo work for double bass composed and performed by Mr. Martín.

One of the greatest pianists and composers of his generation, Sergei Rachmaninoff was on the verge of collapse after the poor reception of his first Symphony, and spiraled into depression. Inconsolable, he was unable to write any music for three years, until his therapist helped him to begin work on his magnificent Piano Concerto No. 2. It saved his career and most probably his life. Hearing this work performed live is an overwhelming experience of nostalgic passion, soaring melody, and uncontrollable excitement.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the ever-evolving Met Orchestra Chamber Ensemble in its first concert of the season. Hear the Serenade for Winds in E-flat Major, a sweet and warmly scored early work by a teenaged Richard Strauss. Gabriela Lena Frank’s Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout follows, mixing elements from Western classical and Andean folk music traditions into a riveting whole. The program closes with another folk-infused masterpiece: Copland’s Pulitzer Prize–winning Appalachian Spring Suite, performed by a 13-piece chamber ensemble, as it was originally scored.

The winners of the 2021 Fischoff Competition and the 2022 Concert Artists Guild Competition showcase the versatility of the cello quartet with music of different periods and contrasting styles and characters. From Vivaldi to Piazolla, the first half of the program journeys through works written for chamber orchestras, operas and virtuosic showpieces, redesigned for the cello quartet. As a unique ensemble that does not have the standardized repertoire of string quartets, the ensemble presents a rare opportunity to create and commission new works by composers of varying backgrounds, in this case Zhou Tian. The Andean Walkabout by Gabriela Lena Frank is the crux of the second half. Leyendas, with its American, Chinese and South American influences, encompasses many of the backgrounds and ideals of the quartet’s members.

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra welcomes the debut of Russian conductor Lidiya Yankovskaya, music director of the Chicago Opera Theater, as she leads the ASO in the suite from Prokofiev’s ballet masterpiece Romeo and Juliet. A work that brings out the full range of this virtuoso ensemble, the music moves from bellicose furor to aching poignancy with some white-knuckle violin playing in between. The concert includes Gabriela Lena Frank’s stirring Elegía Andina, a piece that mixes strains of Peruvian folk song with contemporary sounds to highlight the composer’s multicultural heritage. The program opens with Amjad Ali Khan’s Samaagam, featuring Khan, master of the sarod, and his family of acclaimed artists from the Indian classical music tradition.

Critically acclaimed Chickasaw composer and pianist Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate explores the intersection of classical and Indigenous musical cultures through his compositions, and the title of this astounding piece for solo timpani comes from the Chickasaw word for thunder and lighting. Throughout history, the Chickasaw people believed thunderstorms were the holy people at war above the clouds. Defying death and displaying courage, these warriors would shoot their guns into the sky during the storms. Talowa’ Hiloha (Thunder Song) is an homage to this tradition.

Music’s evocative storytelling powers take center stage in a program of intimate works with big impact. Stunningly gifted violinist Melissa White evokes the cuckoo’s voice, a sleeping goatherd, and the roaring and thundering of hail in “Summer” from Vivaldi’s beloved Four Seasons. Czech composer Leoš Janáček’s sextet Mládí (Youth), written late in his life, offers a nostalgic reimagining of themes from his past. Gabriela Lena Frank pays a vicarious visit to her mother’s native Peru in her picturesque Four Folk Songs. Antonín Dvořák, influenced by his encounters with Native American and Black musical traditions, poured out his affection for America in his enchanting and richly melodious Viola Quintet (American).
