The program explores themes from sapphic poetry and heavenly admiration to haunting heartbreak and suffering in celebration of the divine feminine.

The power of women in mythology has been felt since the dawn of time. Explore the stories of timeless icons from Greek, Jewish, and Hindu traditions in this concert on April 20, at 8pm, in St. Paul's Chapel. Featuring a world premiere work by Reena Esmail, poetry and musical arrangement by Larry Rosenwald and Shira Kammen, and projections by Camilla Tassi. Luca Marenzio (1553–1599) is best known today for his madrigals, which rival Gesualdo for word-painting, chromaticism, and depth of emotion. With about 500 secular madrigals in his catalog, it is fascinating to discover Marenzio's sacred music, which employs his full expressive palette in a spiritual setting. Centered around his masterpiece Salve Regina, Theotokos presents a selection of rarely heard sacred music from this late Renaissance master.

On December 7, at 7pm, Trinity and TENET Vocal Artists present Unconventional Wisdom in St. Paul's Chapel. This concert celebrates music from 17th century Italian nuns and features women from Downtown Voices with Elena Williamson, conductor, and Jolle Greenleaf, artistic director. Ticketed.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B Minor sits at the very pinnacle of the achievements of humankind, shoulder to shoulder with such magnificent and breathtakingly inspirational works as the Sistine Chapel, the Pyramids of Giza, the plays of Shakespeare, and the works of the Ballets Russes. Its musical majesty, virtuosic writing, and spiritual breadth have endeared it to generations of performers and audiences alike. In the words of Swiss composer and publisher Hans Georg Nägli, it is “the greatest artwork of all times and all people.”

Written at the end of his life, the Mass sums the entirety of Bach’s career into a transcendent masterpiece of hope and faith.

The Church of St. Mary the Virgin

This will be the first recreation of Carlo Gesualdo's notorious music in competing authentic tunings of his time. Aside from Nicola Vicentino's complicated arcicembalo, other written testimonies by Gesualdo's musicians implicate that he composed according to a common lute’s meantone temperament. Audiences may hear that the prince went out of tune to express himself after killing his wife and her lover.
