Fun-loving widow Dolly Meyer hires herself out as a matchmaker with a sensational success rate. No wonder that the extremely hard-to-match Horace Vandergelder from the New York suburb of Yonkers turns to her after he has decided to get married. Vandergelder may be rich, but he's extremely eccentric and thinks everyone is an idiot – except for himself, of course. Dolly quickly hatches a plan to marry the businessman herself, but first arranges a date for him with milliner Irene Molloy in New York.
