Celebrate Lunar New Year with a vibrant fusion of music and dance during this special collaboration between the Portland Chamber Orchestra and White Lotus Foundation. Lion & Lotus: A Festival of Music and Dance brings together modern and traditional art forms in a joyful celebration of creativity and community.

Experience powerful works by acclaimed composers including Oswald Huỳnh, a Portland-native and Rome Prize winner whose music weaves a distinctive Vietnamese-American voice, and Bright Sheng, a Pulitzer Prize finalist known for his evocative Chinese-American compositions. 

The evening also features the mesmerizing ancient art form of lion dance—a popular cultural performance used to scare away evil spirits, as well as to bring joy, prosperity, and good fortune for the new year—performed by the White Lotus Foundation Lion Dancers, which is the largest lion dance team in Oregon.

It couldn't be more Christmassy! The anticipation of the upcoming holidays is audible in this concert full of Christmas tunes, sleigh rides, and Christmas wishes. The focus is on the music for Erich Wolfgang Korngold's fairytale ballet "The Snowman": Colombine and her admirer Pierrot attempt to escape from the clutches of Uncle Pantaloon – and succeed with the help of a snowman. The story is narrated. Finally, things get particularly festive with Otto Nicolai's Christmas Overture, featuring ever-changing variations of the chorale "Vom Himmel hoch."

Regularly voted one of Britain’s favourite pieces of classical music, Vaughan Williams’s Tallis Fantasia is at the heart of this fabulous programme of English music. John Wilson is in demand at the highest level across the globe, having conducted many of the world's finest orchestras over the past 30 years. Britten’s Serenade is one of his best loved works and the programme ends with the musical fireworks of Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro for string quartet and string orchestra. Under the motto "Planet Shostakovich," the Jena Philharmonic will embark on a musical orbit centered around the multifaceted works of Dmitri Shostakovich in the 2025-2026 season. The text of this musical reading is based on a novella by Karen Blixen, which explores piety, sensuality, gratitude, and a phenomenal feast. ‘No other English composer offers more beauty in sound,’ Thomas Beecham said of Delius. There’s no more extravagant, impassioned or overwhelming a canvas for that beauty than A Mass of Life. Taking Nietzsche’s rapturous prose-poem Also sprach Zarathustra as a starting point, Delius imagined a secular Mass – a cantata for orchestra, chorus and soloists celebrating the transcendent power and triumph of the human spirit in the face of death. Sir Mark Elder conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra, with soloists including baritone Roderick Williams and tenor David Butt Philip.

At this concert we are delighted to be supporting local children’s charity Honeypot. Since 1996 Honeypot has been working to enhance the lives of young carers aged 5-12 years by providing respite breaks and a holistic range of services. In the UK nationwide, they give young carers a break from demanding and stressful responsibilities at home and provide a safe, nurturing environment where children at risk can develop their full potential.

We are very excited to be ending our season with the first ever visit to the UK of the internationally famous Buenos Aires Symphony Orchestra of Colón Opera.  This concert is of particular significance as we celebrate Bradford’s year as the UK’s City of Culture, with a performance of our own city’s great composer Frederik Delius’s piano concerto, performed by the distinguished British pianist Mark Bebbington.  Prior to the tour, this great Delius work will receive its Argentinian premiere, a concert that has been inspired by our position as the UK’s City of Culture.  The programme will open with Wagner’s romantic Prelude & Liebestod from Tristan & Isolde and in the second half there will be music from Bizet’s much-loved Carmen Suite, Tchaikovsky’s lyrical Swan Lake suite and the programme will end with two dazzling, scintillating show stoppers from two of Argentina’s greatest composers - Alberto Ginastera and Astor Piazzolla.

Experience the majestic blend of cultures with the "Symphonie du Nouveau Monde" performed by the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège (OPRL) under the baton of Pablo González. This iconic symphony, first premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York in 1893, is a masterful fusion of Czech music and melodies inspired by the musical folklore of the Native Americans. Notably, it features one of the most beautiful themes ever written for the English horn in its slow movement.

The concert will also spotlight the orchestral music of Ysaÿe, which has seen a resurgence of interest over the past decade. Among the rediscovered gems is the enchanting "Poème nocturne" from 1926, with the OPRL having the honor of recording the first album of this piece in December 2023.

This performance is part of the "Grands classiques" series and is available for both subscription and à la carte booking. It's a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in a program that includes DELIUS's "The Walk to the Paradise Garden," YSAŸE's "Poème nocturne," and DVOŘÁK's Symphony No. 9, "From the New World."

Immerse yourself in the holiday spirit with the Oklahoma Chamber Symphony's enchanting "Sounds of the Season" concert. Romanticism has many facets, and some of the most beautiful can be heard here. The range extends from the stroke of genius of the 14-year-old Franz Schubert to the Spring Fantasy of the late Romantic Delius. As well as Schubert, Schumann, Grieg and Brahms are represented in our program with songs that the Swiss composer Fabian Müller has arranged for clarinet and string orchestra. The fifth of the once immensely popular serenades by Robert Fuchs will be heard at the end. Fuchs, the Viennese teacher of Gustav Mahler, Richard Strauss and many others, pays homage to his colleague Johann Strauss in the last movement of his work - with quotes from "The Bat".

We celebrate the musical life and impact of the late composer and conductor Bramwell Tovey, one of Canada’s most influential musical forces. Maestro Evan has carefully crafted a program to honour Bramwell, who was a special friend and mentor, supporting him at every opportunity during his early career. Bramwell’s own works are startling and brilliant, overflowing with his unique voice. Frederick Delius, also featured on this program, was one of his most beloved composers and Elgar’s towering Enigma Variations was Bramwell’s favourite piece.

No one ever channeled the noble spirit of England with as much sweetness and pathos as Vaughan Williams, and no one understands that better than his compatriot (and president of the Vaughan Williams Society) Sir Andrew Davis. Grieg tinged his suave Piano Concerto with the icy chill and hallowed history of Norway, a piece perfectly suited to Alessio Bax, who plays with “an ease, precision and beauty so seemingly effortless that the music appeared to live and breathe of its own volition.” (The New York Times) This musical travelogue begins with an idyllic country scene from Delius, a worldly Romantic.

Once again the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra will finish out our season with another "over-the-top" orchestral journey. The young Russian phenomenon Andrey Gugnin -- who, last season, entered our hearts with a magisterial rendition of the Grieg Piano Concerto, done miraculously with the LSO without rehearsal! -- returns for what will no doubt be an equally majestic reading of the first of two concertos of Johannes Brahms, with whom our season began.....And on our second half, in another great La Crosse tradition, our two winning Conductor Wannabees will regale us with their podium talents! Two works redolent of the joys of summer -- a  poignant, forgotten gem of the Englishman Frederick Delius, and the ecstatic and oh-so-French "Daphnis and Chloe" ballet of Maurice Ravel -- wind up what will be a magnificent grand finale!
