Hunting horns, bird calls, songs without words: The opening of this year's concert season is entirely dedicated to musical Romanticism. The unbridled Romantic spirit is realized in Schumann's Cello Concerto. The slow, song-like middle movement is merely a brief moment of respite in the virtuoso battle of emotions unfolding between solo instrument and orchestra. Dramatic contrasts also characterize Bruckner's Symphony No. 4, which is one of his most popular works, not least because of its lively, roaring Hunting Scherzo. It begins with a mysterious horn call over string tremolo and ends in one of the most triumphant symphonic finales in history.
