What lies beyond the measurable? With this question in mind, we commissioned two choreographers to delve into a world that transcends all that is perceptible and empirical. In their new pieces, Sidonie Fossé and Rachelle Anaïs Scott explore the metaphysical potential of bodies in motion. They investigate first reasons and ultimate principles, the meaning and purpose of all existence, or even reality itself.

Vidmar Ballettsaal

Four people going through the hell of their own emotions are at the centre of Jean-Philippe Rameau’s masterpiece Castor et Pollux. Choreographer and director Nanine Linning, already known to audiences in Graz as the director of the Giulietta act of The Tales of Hoffmann in the 2023/24 season, once again merges the intrinsic elements of dance and music theatre in the French baroque opera. Her artistic partner on this journey into the human abyss is Bernhard Forck, a specialist in early music.

With what is probably the most famous fragment in opera literature, four directing teams are presenting themselves for the first time at Graz Opera, immersing themselves in aesthetically completely different universes with very different artistic approaches – film animation, puppetry and choreographically moving bodies. In three episodes, dazzling worlds full of fantastic characters and events unfold. Always at the centre of the action as the protagonist and creator of the scenery: the poet himself.

Vidmarhallen

The future is, in many respects, a great unknown. Will there be peace? Will nature recover? Where and how will our society develop? In the two-part dance performance at the Vidmarhallen, the two choreographers Jiří Pokorný and Ella Rothschild explore this theme, allowing two echoes of a future to resonate through dance in their new creations.

Echoes manifest in the body as traces of movement, as repetitions, distortions, and slowing down. The body becomes a sensor for what is to come, a seismograph of a future that announces itself in gesture, breath, and rhythm.
