Kinetic Ensemble opens their 10th concert season by featuring composers who have digested and transformed musical material from their immediate geographic and cultural contexts. Turkish-American composer Erberk Eryılmaz rewrites the mechanics of traditional Turkish percussion for an ensemble of piano and strings; Dutch composer Joey Roukens pulls material from old sea shanties and contemporary pop music alike; and American composer Alvin Singleton draws inspiration from the improvisations of his colleague Leroy Jenkins.

The program opens with Joey Rouken’s thought-provoking 365—365 measures of beguiling twists and turns that take on different guises, from impressionist-like textures to minimalist passages, and references to pop and jazz. And at the end of work, listeners arrive exactly at the point where the piece started… not unlike a year cycle of 365 days. Concertgoers will receive a special treat as the virtuosic Lang Lang returns to San Diego, performing Saint-Saëns’ stunning Piano Concerto No. 2.

Every journey has obstacles and leaves the traveler changed upon returning. How is this journey and transfiguration expressed through music? Works include Joey Roukens’s sea-shanty-infused Visions at Sea, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s lush Souvenir de Florence, and Jimmy Lopez’s transcendental Guardian of the Horizon, performed by Adé Williams and Gabriel Gabezas, who premiered the work with the Sphinx Virtuosi in 2017.

Dutch violinist Noa Wildschut opens her debut Davies Symphony Hall recital with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s wistful and moving Violin Sonata in E minor, K.304. The program also features music by Maurice Ravel and Paul Schoenfield both inspired by American jazz and blues traditions, along with Joey Rouken’s Sarasvati, written for Wilsdchut and her collaborator, German pianist Elisabeth Brauß, evoking ancient Hindu myths, placid musical scenes, and ending in a virtuosic blaze of fire and energy.

"The remarkable soloist Ning Feng, his tone so sweet and pure, believed in every note, and as a result so did we” wrote The Times, after a performance of Brahms’s Violin Concerto by this phenomenal Chinese violinist – and after all, it takes a special kind of soloist to do justice to this noblest of the great Romantic violin concertos. This should be something special, and conductor Antony Hermus has devised a whole concert charged with wonder. Cinderella flees at midnight, and in Prokofiev’s shimmering ballet score, you’ll hear every chime, every magic spell, and every loving glance. Dutch composer Joey Roukens lights the touchpaper with a riotous nocturnal rollercoaster ride through a city of dreams.
