Plaintive solo lines, brass fanfares, and an Odessa street song come together in Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 2, played by Truls Mørk. The young conductor Klaus Mäkelä leads the Orchestra in Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, Pathétique, a work of profound emotion that was premiered only nine days before the composer’s death. Jimmy López’s Perú negro draws on Afro-Peruvian influences as it builds to a frenzied conclusion.

To conclude Berkeley Symphony's historic 50th Anniversary season, we join in a communal celebration with Beethoven's epic Ninth Symphony and a reimagined libretto set by former U.S. Poet Laureate Tracy K. Smith. Also highlighted is the World Premiere commission of Rise, a celebratory work written in honor of Berkeley Symphony's 50th Anniversary season by Berkeley-based composer Jimmy López.

Twenty-five-year-old conductor Klaus Mäkelä leads the SF Symphony in Jimmy López’ Perú Negro, a fantasy on Afro-Peruvian folksongs, while violinist Vilde Frang performs Alban Berg’s Violin Concerto, a work rife with the emotion of a composer grappling with the fragility of life. The program closes with Dmitri Shostakovich’s tragic Tenth Symphony, widely seen as a depiction of the composer’s terrifying life in Stalinist Russia

LA Phil and AYS present Sounds About Town at the grand Walt Disney Concert Hall. Titled  Intersections, the program features a collection of sound experiences that highlights the breadth and vibrancy across the world of orchestral composition from composers such as Jean Sibelius, Unsuk Chin, Jimmy Lopez, Brian Raphael Nabors, and AYS’ Music Director Carlos Izcaray to name a few. AYS welcomes captivating Grammy-nominated violinist, Tessa Lark, to perform the Pulitzer Prize-winning violin concerto by Jennifer Higdon.

The outstanding American Youth Symphony returns with a program titled INTERSECTIONS that primarily focuses upon living composers—from Unsuk Chin to Jimmy Lopez—highlighted by Jennifer Higdon’s Prize-winning Violin Concerto, featuring Grammy-nominated Tessa Lark. Carlos Izcaray closes with his own work, which draws on his personal and family history of immigration while showcasing various instruments in “a love letter to the orchestra.” 

American Youth Symphony - Sounds About Town

Mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke returns to Davies Symphony Hall for a program made up entirely of world premieres written by composers during the pandemic and dedicated specifically to Cooke. Together with pianist Kirill Kuzmin, Cooke shines a light on the hopes, fears, and observations of living through an unprecedented time, featuring the brightest compositional talents in music today.

Celebrate with a musically-driven episode of Close Quarters that features an original screenplay by prolific television and stage writer christopher oscar peña (HBO’s Insecure, CW’s Jane the Virgin). Curated musically by Latin GRAMMY®-nominated composer Juan Pablo Contreras, this episode showcases music by Jimmy López, Jessie Montgomery and Contreras in an enigmatic merger that heralds the beginning of a new year.
