A pair of dances that illustrate two distinctive aspects of Jerome Robbins’ artistry highlight this diverse program. Interplay, first seen in 1945, features music by Morton Gould, and was described by one critic as “the foundation of an American mid-forties classic style.” Other Dances features just two dancers in a display of sweeping, occasionally folk-inflected ballet technique. The Robbins pieces are joined by newer works: Pam Tanowitz’s Gustave le Gray No. 1 is performed to a score for solo piano by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw, its title a tribute to the 19th-century French artist known for his innovations in the nascent medium of photography. And Justin Peck’s Year of the Rabbit, his second dance for the Company, marked Peck’s first collaboration with the singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens.

Maestro Tausk is joined by British composer and musicologist Paul Rissmann, as they discover and uncover the secrets to Hector Berlioz’s incomparable Symphonie fantastique. Completely revolutionary at its premiere in 1830, the piece is the product of an opium induced dreamscape. Dive deep into this great musical drama and discover its lasting power to surprise and astonish.

Mendelssohn’s First Symphony, written when we he was just 15, dazzles with the fire of youth.

Caroline Shaw is a musician who moves roles, genres, and mediums, trying to imagine a world of sound that has never been heard before but has always existed. She works often in collaboration with other, as producer, composer, violinist, and vocalist, which won her the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Music and three Grammy Awards. Caroline has written over 100 works in the last decade including for Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Flemming, and Dawn Upshaw, and has contributed to films and podcasts such as Beyonce’s Homecoming, Tár, and Dolly Parton’s America, among others.
