A pair of dances that illustrate two distinctive aspects of Jerome Robbins’ artistry highlight this diverse program. Interplay, first seen in 1945, features music by Morton Gould, and was described by one critic as “the foundation of an American mid-forties classic style.” Other Dances features just two dancers in a display of sweeping, occasionally folk-inflected ballet technique. The Robbins pieces are joined by newer works: Pam Tanowitz’s Gustave le Gray No. 1 is performed to a score for solo piano by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw, its title a tribute to the 19th-century French artist known for his innovations in the nascent medium of photography. And Justin Peck’s Year of the Rabbit, his second dance for the Company, marked Peck’s first collaboration with the singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens.

The Quartet celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2019, and, in its years of touring, has performed in all fifty states and has appeared in the most important concert halls worldwide. The Manzanita Quartet returns to Bridges Hall of Music after their September 2022 premiere. The members include Sakura Tsai, violin; Kira Blumberg, viola; Eric Lindholm, cello; and Genevieve Feiwen Lee, piano. For this program they will perform music by Robert Schumann and others.

Rimsky-Korsakov’s much-loved Scheherazade beckons us into a world brimming with dazzling sights, wonder, and enchantment. Join us for an enchanting afternoon of chamber music at the "String Spring Fling," presented by the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra (THSO). This special event will take place on Sunday, March 17, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Hatfield Hall, located within the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology at 5500 Wabash Avenue, Terre Haute, IN, 47803.

Under the artistic direction of Dr. David Bowden, the THSO Strings and Principal Harp, Melanie Mashner, will deliver a performance filled with lush string sounds and the warm beauty of harp vibrations. The concert will feature the return of Elina Rubio, our recent concertmaster, who will dazzle the audience with a solo performance of Ravel’s Tzigane Gypsy Dance. Additionally, Elina will join forces with our current concertmaster, Erina Buchholz, for a memorable rendition of the second movement of Bach’s Double Concerto.

The program also includes a variety of pieces that promise to captivate and delight, from waltzes and a Strauss polka played pizzicato to a mesmerizing new work by Caroline Shaw, Entr’acte for Strings, and the stunning Fratres by Arvo Pärt. The concert will conclude with a selection of pieces including a jig by Grainger, a Hoe-Down by Copland, and a beautiful harp concert aria featuring Melanie Mashner.

This 75 to 80-minute performance will be held without intermission, allowing the audience to fully immerse themselves in the music. Following the concert, a VIP reception will offer the chance to meet and mingle with the musicians.

“Few string quartets can command the stage like the Calder Quartet,” declared The Washington Post of this versatile and vibrant ensemble that excels equally at composer collaborations and standard-setting performances of classics. They set out to do just that with two programs mixing it up with chamber music milestones and thrilling new voices. In this program, Antoine Hunter, a superbly gifted dancer/choreographer, founder of Urban Jazz Dance Company, and advocate for the Deaf community, expresses his experience in a hearing world through dance.

Proudly featuring WMP artists, Crystal Lee and Heidi Sturniolo in Mozart’s Concerto for Flute and Harp, our production of ‘Mozart and the Movies’ will be a crowd favorite! This concert brings to life many moments inspired by dramatic scenes in film such as Pulitzer Prize Winner, Caroline Shaw’s deeply-affecting Entr’acte for string orchestra which is a soulful work inspired by the classical traditions of Haydn. Shaw says, "I love the way some music (like the minuets of Haydn's Op. 77) suddenly takes you to the other side of Alice’s looking glass, in a kind of absurd, subtle, technicolor transition". For those drawn to mid-century Hollywood film, Bernard Hermann’s (composer extraordinaire) Scene d'Amour from 'Vertigo' is a lush, timeless classic sure to jog some movie memories. The program will conclude with Erich Korngold’s music from The Sea Hawk – a film score that continues to captivate listeners and bring audiences together for a heroic, victorious finale.

Inspired by Fleming’s 2023 Grammy Award-winning album, Voice of Nature: the Anthropocene this special performance with pianist Gerald Martin Moore spans classical, romantic and contemporary music, exploring nature as both inspiration and victim of humanity. We thought about calling this concert ‘The ‘Monstrously Talented’ Mr Beilman’, not because it relates to a Patricia Highsmith novel, (though there’ll be plenty of slaying by Ben on his “Ysaÿe” Guarneri del Gesù violin from 1740), but so we could use one of our favourite quotes about this amazing violinist. We first collaborated with Ben back in 2016 and we’re happy to be back together for a concert that he’ll direct and perform the solo in Bach’s Violin Concerto. The concert starts with Entr’acte by the American composer Caroline Shaw, who moves between musical genres, winning awards and accolades left, right and centre. The larger than life Igor Stravinsky wrote his concerto for strings after moving to Hollywood in the golden age of the 1940s. Meanwhile, over on the East Coast, Aaron Copland was writing Appalachian Spring which went on to earn him a Pulitzer Prize for music.

LCO & Friends: The One With Benjamin Beilman

Meteorologist Mike Alger narrates Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw’s musical telling of a beloved children’s book in a program of works which use music to tell stories.  Kevin Lau’s fiery portrait of the Greek Goddess, Artemis, demands immediate attention while Rossini’s signature wit and sparkle are on full display in his take on the Cinderella fairy tale.
