In addition to regular musical coaching, language courses, role study and work on the repertoire, five courses are on the program for the opera studio this season: a scenic workshop with director Gregor Horres and four musical master classes led by bel canto specialist Peter Berne, KS Barbara Frittoli, pianist and vocal coach Jonathan Papp and Edith Wiens. As always, the popular master class concerts at the end of the courses allow the audience to follow the development of the opera studio.

Tradition is meant to be flipped upside down - this is the view of milkman Tevje's three daughters, who would rather take their luck into their own hands than rely on the expertise of a matchmaker Jente. They drive their father to despair and shake up his world; a world in which not only the laws of the family are challenged, but the entire existence in the shtetl is so endangered that escaping and exile become a reality. Jerry Bock contrasts the melancholy of forlornness with a life-affirming verve.

An ambitious local politician is talked into building a spaceport by an oligarch – to help his city - and perhaps himself - achieve new greatness. And yet Gabriel von Eisenstein actually has other problems: He is due to start a prison sentence tomorrow for disorderly conduct. But why face reality? Eisenstein prefers to follow the advice of his friend Dr. Falke and have a good time before starting his prison sentence - and thus falls into a net of intrigue in which quite a few honorable personalities stand to lose their good reputation.

Two peoples find themselves in the barbaric grip of war after Nabucco and his troops attack Jerusalem. The Babylonian ruler and Zaccaria, the leader of the Hebrews, do not budge an inch from their opposing viewpoints in this profound conflict, while the daily grind of war continues to bring new suffering to both peoples. The seemingly hopeless conflict does not even stop at their own families: Zaccaria holds Nabucco's favorite daughter Fenena hostage, while she has long since changed sides out of love for Ismaele and lives among the enemy people. Nabucco's other daughter, Abigaille, envies her sister's happiness and her father's throne and forges disastrous plans...

Giulio Cesare has defeated his enemy Pompeo and chased him all the way to Egypt. Against Caesare's will, however, Pompeo was then executed by the Egyptian king Tolomeo. The wife and son of the slain man swear to avenge him. Cleopatra, meanwhile, wants the Egyptian throne all to herself. In order to get it, she must get rid of her brother Tolomeo and win Cesare's support. She seduces him, he falls for her - and makes Cleopatra Queen of Egypt.

While the grimy back yards of the Weimar Republic were filled with unemployed singers practicing their skills in the hope of earning enough for a warm meal, night after night the revue theatres of the Kurfürstendamm would present glittering golden dreams to an audience of millions hungry for entertainment. Amid the glitz of the roaring 1920s, the fame of the Comedian Harmonists burned especially brightly: modelled on the American vocal quartet The Revelers, the six-strong ensemble made up of Ari Leschnikoff, Erich Abraham-Collin, Harry Frommermann, Roman Cycowski, Robert Biberti and pianist Erwin Bootz thrilled German audiences with mixture of sassy and entertaining lyrics set to the latest music and sung in perfect close harmony. With hits such as “Veronika, der Lenz ist da”, “Ein Freund, ein guter Freund” and “Wochenend und Sonnenschein” they conquered the concert halls of Europe at record speed and thanks to the modern mass medium of gramophone records they soon became a fixture in living rooms across Germany.

A psychological drama between duty and freedom

Do you fancy a pas de deux today - or would you prefer a solo? Perhaps you are in the mood for something beguilingly sweet or refreshingly bubbly? At “ Dance à la carte”, the audience creates the choreography according to their own taste - together with the team and the dancers of the Ballett am Rhein. The guests choose individual “courses” from a thoughtfully compiled menu: movement elements, music, stories. At the end, what has been created together is served - an exclusive world premiere, unique and only for this evening.

Of course, it's much more fun to play than to help with housework! Hänsel and Gretel know that too. It's just a shame that they smash the milk churn during their boisterous games and ruin their dinner. What should the poor family put on the table now? The mother scolds her children and sends them into the forest to look for berries. However, what begins as an adventure soon turns serious at dusk: the siblings get lost and soon fall into the clutches of the wicked witch. Now they have to summon up all their courage and ingenuity to free themselves.

The Queen of the Night asks Tamino to free Pamina from the clutches of the supposed villain Sarastro. And so, together with the bird catcher Papageno, he sets out to become a hero. But there are many surprises awaiting him on his adventurous rescue mission... Barrie Kosky's multimedia staging, which the director developed together with the British artists' collective “1927”, has long enjoyed cult status around the world. The imaginative interplay of scene, music and video animation elegantly transposes Mozart's opera into the present day.

But one man senses the self-destructive jealousy smouldering behind the façade of the successful man: Jago. Ever since Otello's ensign was passed over for a promotion, he has been driving his superior's downfall with a coolly calculated destructive fury, cleverly feeding Otello's doubts about Desdemona's fidelity...
