In the year marking the 50th anniversary of Dmitri Shostakovich’s death, the ESO plays his lyrical and powerful Symphony No. 5, a work in which many listeners hear despair beneath the glorious melodies. The work is paired with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme with cello soloist Christine Lamprea.
