Presented by a special guest presenter Genevieve Lang and with performances by the renowned AHE Quartet, this captivating event takes you on a journey through Haydn’s transformation of the string quartet—from its charming beginnings to the masterpieces that redefined chamber music.

Presented by a special guest presenter Genevieve Lang and with performances by the renowned AHE Quartet, this captivating event traces the influence of the celebrated Bohemian patron of Haydn and Beethoven, Prince Lobkowicz. Through live performances of excerpts from Haydn, Beethoven, and lesser-known Bohemian masters such as Wranitzky and Mysliveček and more, this hour-long program offers a rare chance to experience the music of the era up close.

Presented by a special guest Genevieve Lang and with performances by the renowned AHE Quartet, this event traces Haydn’s journey to London and explores the changes in his relatively isolated world at Esterházy to world famous composer in London.

18th Century Unpacked 3 - Haydn’s London Connection

A feast of Haydn with the first installment of a cycle of Haydn’s London symphonies in newly commissioned historical chamber arrangements for septet including the Oxford and Drumroll.

David has carefully structured his selection according to key and timbre, and the esteemed Australian Haydn Ensemble have chosen instrumental movements by Felix Mendelssohn (at his most Schubertian!) to contrast or reinforce each song.

The movements date from the last tragic six months of Mendelssohn’s life, in which he battled both illness and bitter mourning for his sister Fanny. Published posthumously as Op. 81, the Andante, Scherzo, Capriccio and Fugue are strange and passionate stand-alone works that push into territory even more melancholy than his final quartet in F minor.
