They are a classical hit and have made their creator world famous. But not in their original form, but in Maurice Ravel's orchestral version, Modest Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" began its triumphal march. The edgy Russian individualist had originally composed them as a piano cycle, inspired by an exhibition of drawings and stage designs by his late friend Viktor Hartmann.
