Classical and jazz specialists from the SWR Symphony Orchestra use their selection of music with personal commentary to present the mutual relationship between the two genres of classical and jazz. Jazz standards such as "Autumn Leaves", "Take the A-Train" or "I Got Rhythm" meet works by Maurice Ravel or Wolfgang Rihm. The students learn first-hand from the musicians how, for example, harmony and rhythm change in jazz, which sound effects are possible on the instruments and how they are used, how and why jazz saxophonist and solo bassoonist of the SWR Symphony Orchestra Libor Sima reinterprets the jazz standards and whether improvisation really works without a plan. With its moderated live performance, the concert offers a perfect complement to the Abitur topic and as an introduction to the subject of jazz.
