A kiss is: an expression of deep tenderness, muscle work, the exchange of bacteria, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation - and in Iowa it is forbidden if it lasts longer than five minutes. Kisses are ritualized and regulated; they can be a sign of love, subservience, betrayal or even death. Soprano Dorothee Mields and pianist Christine Schornsheim have put together a program of songs and arias full of lip encounters composed by Johann Sebastian Bach and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel. Even the tangent piano used here fits the theme: its sound is created by the interaction of two sticks - one presses, the other dampens. If that isn't a kiss! Here is another appetizer from the song Bevelise and Lysidor by probably the most famous Bach son, the text is by Ewald Christian Kleist: "The man who after the honeymoon / kisses out of love and not out of duty, / ... / who, when her autumn is already approaching, / kisses her as if it were her spring, / is a phoenix that enchants; / it's just a pity that he is rare."
