A decade ago, Michael Francis conducted Aaron Copland’s grand Third Symphony for a momentous occasion – his first opening night as Music Director of The Florida Orchestra. For “The Great American Symphony,” Copland sought a big finish, and he found it in his own Fanfare for the Common Man. That fanfare is the inspiration for the opening work on this program, Joan Tower's Fanfare for the Uncommon Woman, which she dedicates to “women who take risks...
