Music that remembers and gives rise to hope can be heard in this 6th symphony concert. Mieczysław Weinberg dedicates his Polish Melodies to his beloved but lost homeland . On 6 September 1939 the young composer sat spellbound by the radio: the propaganda chief on the staff of the Supreme Commander in Poland announced that the German Wehrmacht was approaching Warsaw. The young music student immediately fled to the Soviet Union. “Poland is my homeland,” Weinberg maintained throughout his life, even after he had found a second home, a new family and the most successful period of his creative life in Russia. In Moscow he was initially able to establish himself as a successful composer, but the post-war period and the increasing oppression of minorities brought ever greater repression to the Jew Weinberg. The Polish Melodies , which Weinberg composed in 1950, paint a picture of his first homeland – if one believes the cheerful sentences, they must have been memories of a carefree time. Only once more, in 1966, did Weinberg return to Poland and learn that his parents and sister had been murdered by the Nazis in the Trawniki concentration camp.

The plot of Hoffmann's final tale oscillates between fantasy and reality: We experience the grotesque adventures of the young Peregrinus Tyß – in which a seemingly vanished princess, a friend, and two long-dead naturalists play crucial roles. The eponymous Master Flea, the leader of the fleas, provides Tyß with a "thought microscope" (a kind of lie detector) with which he can see through people and even fend off a fabricated crime by the scheming Court Councilor Knarrpanti...

Beethoven's Pastorale is a musical love letter to nature, evoking precisely the feeling one experiences while strolling through meadows, over small stream bridges, and through forests. Pure nature and romance! But wait! Anna and Malte only discover garbage that was already being dumped in nature in Beethoven's time. As environmental detectives, we rely on the audience to ensure that a breath of fresh air can blow again tomorrow.

2. Concert for young people

The family epic "The Eighth Life (For Brilka)" tells the story of six generations of women in the Yashi family in Georgia throughout the 20th century—beginning in 1900, from the Tsarist era to Berlin after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the civil war in Georgia. While the novel chronicles the rise and fall of communism, it remains closely connected to the stories of its protagonists.

It's no wonder that Viennese-born Fritz Kreisler was familiar with the "Viennese style," which is reflected in the collection of character pieces entitled Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen (Old Viennese Dance Tunes) : "Liebesfreud," "Liebesleid ," and "Schön Rosmarin" ( Love's Joy), "Liebesleid," and "Schön Rosmarin" (Beautiful Rosemary) are three charming miniatures, exhilarating and catchy, the second also somewhat elegiac—but all three with melodic wit and elegance. It's a true curiosity that the composer Fritz Kreisler long concealed the fact that he himself composed his encores for violin recitals, which often appear as stylistic copies. Kreisler himself liked to play them as encores, and for many soloists, they are still part of the "musical confectionery" with which the audience is treated to a sweet end to the concert.

Sky Night is a dance-theatre piece about friendship, identity, and the mysteries of the universe. Five dancers transform their passion for the stars into an exploration of what it means to experience change, to face an uncertain world, and to belong.

With In the Poppy Field, Paloma Muñoz invites the audience on an intense, sensual journey in which the bodies on stage exist beyond function and efficiency. Together with ten dancers, Muñoz explores liminal spaces—between past and future, animal and human, violence and tenderness—creating a world in which conventions dissolve and new forms of connection become possible. The group reveals itself in its raw, resistant presence—unbounded, norm-free, and vibrant. Disorganized and pulsating, the dancers become a community inhabited by animals, molecules, and desires.

In a strict Calvinist community in the north of Scotland, young Bess falls in love with Jan, a Norwegian who works on a nearby oil rig. Shortly after their wedding, Jan narrowly survives a serious accident that leaves him paralyzed from the waist down. As a substitute for their now impossible physical relationship, Jan encourages his wife to sleep with other men and to tell him about it. Strengthened by her love and her faith, Bess goes against the moral code of her community and sacrifices herself for Jan, who feels increasingly better the further she pushes her own boundaries...

Seven times this season, members of the Mainz Philharmonic State Orchestra and guests will perform Sunday matinees in the foyer of the Grand Hall. Here, various ensembles cultivate the rich genre of chamber music and present works of their own choosing – from great classics to rare chamber music works.

The operetta The Beautiful Helen offers a little insight here: Helen was supposedly the most beautiful woman in the world in her time (around 1250 BC). Aphrodite, who had won the beauty contest with Athena and Hera, had promised Helen to the judge Paris as a prize. At the time of the contest, however, Helen was not free; she was married to Menelaus, the king of Sparta. The prize could therefore only be fulfilled by kidnapping Helen, which is ultimately seen as the trigger for the Trojan War.
