Franz Schubert is rarely as much a singer and song composer in his instrumental music as he is in his "Rosamunde" string quartet. Despite all the melodic beauty, Schubert does not depict a pure idyll here, but remains true to himself as a refuser of clear moods. Tender moments are rudely torn open, there is a constant back and forth between major and minor. Schubert builds up tension very skilfully and breaks expectations with attractive changes.
