Wagner's opera "Tannhäuser" lasts a good three hours, but in the overture he tells us, using purely instrumental means, what it will be about: the conflict between chaste and carnal love, lust and faith - set in powerful tones in the monumental overture. For example, with the motif of the pilgrims' choir, which is gently sung by the woodwinds at the beginning, but later shines triumphantly in the brass. No less monumental is Strauss' symphonic poem "Thus Spoke Zarathustra", with which he created one of the most famous works of classical music. The natural tones of the trumpets emerge from the formless rumbling of the orchestra at the beginning, before the sun breaks out in radiant C major - over a powerful organ tone. The late romantic Strauss, on the other hand, shows himself cheerful, idyllic and from his quasi-chamber music side in his oboe concerto. He himself once described it as a "wrist exercise" - and yet he still managed to conjure up one of the most charming concertos for oboe on paper. In it, the audience can also get to know an orchestral musician from his solo side: Mikhail Zhuravlev is the principal oboist with the Duisburg Philharmonic Orchestra.
