France has a long and glorious organ tradition. And this is also where Johann Vexo comes from. Born in Nancy in 1978, he was appointed organist at the choir organ of Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral at the age of 25 and is also titular organist at the Cavaillé-Coll organ in Nancy Cathedral. For his Toccata, he has put together a program that includes some of the greatest names in the history of French organ music. César Franck, for example, was probably the most important French composer and organist of the second half of the 19th century. He was not only titular organist at the Parisian church of Sainte Clotilde, but also an influential teacher. His students included Louis Vierne, who was titular organist at Notre-Dame de Paris Cathedral. His mighty organ symphonies are monumental, colorful and full of power. Marcel Dupré also worked in Paris: as organist at the large Cavaillé-Coll organ in Saint-Sulpice. He was also the teacher of Gaston Litaize, who was blind from birth and was appointed titular organist at Saint François-Xavier in Paris in 1946. The program begins with Johann Sebastian Bach, a composer and organ virtuoso who represents German organ music, which is also rich in tradition.
