Don’t miss the Houston premiere of the Pulitzer Prize-winning 2011 opera Silent Night. HGO will present a new production of the opera, in a revised version from hit-making composer Kevin Puts, who recently debuted his The Hours to raves at the Met. Inspired by the 2005 film Joyeux Noël, this powerful portrayal of peace amidst conflict captures the real-life Christmas truce of 1914, during World War I.

Brought to life by director/designer Antony McDonald in his company debut, this family-friendly production unfolds in a German romantic setting, full of dirndls, Alpine hats, and misty clouds.

Join us for HGO’s second annual Family Day, featuring a 90-minute, relaxed-environment performance of Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel, directed by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke and performed entirely in English.

Young guests will not only be enchanted by the opera’s young protagonists as they scheme to escape the Witch’s realm—they’ll also love the kid-friendly lobby activities before the show and during intermission!

HGO Family Day: Hansel & Gretel

There can be no more fitting way for HGO to celebrate the centennial of the birth of composer Carlisle Floyd—who founded the company’s Butler Studio program with then-General Director David Gockley in 1977—than a special staging of his evocative opera Of Mice and Men, performed by a cast of artists from the 2025-26 class of the Butler Studio. Based on John Steinbeck’s 1937 novella of the same name, the acclaimed 1970 opera will be presented by the Butler Studio in the Wortham’s intimate Cullen Theater.

A bale of hay comes to life and plays with a little girl. A headless mannequin holds a lobster on a leash. A confused astronaut wanders amongst a group of choristers while a video of a collapsing glacier plays in the background. These are but a few of the arresting images from Robert Wilson’s mesmerizing vision of the beloved Messiah, composed by Handel and arranged by Mozart.

Outrageous disguises, intercepted love letters, and comic misunderstandings—Rossini’s uproarious masterpiece, The Barber of Seville, has them all. This fan favorite receives a delightful staging from director Joan Font, returning to Houston following the triumph of his acclaimed Cinderella.
