Vaulted to worldwide prominence as the youngest-ever winner of the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, Yunchan Lim returns to Symphony Hall for Robert Schumann’s lyrical, introspective Piano Concerto, written for his wife Clara, one of the most admired pianists of the 19th century. Inspired throughout his life by literary sources, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote his Manfred — actually a four-movement symphony — based on Lord Byron’s Gothic verse play of the same name about a nihilistic nobleman wandering the Alps in search of meaning.

John Adams’ Nixon in China redefined opera by taking as its subject matter recent world events. Opera luminaries Thomas Hampson and Renée Fleming bring excerpts from this groundbreaking work to the Symphony Hall stage. The Chairman Dances, Adams’ "foxtrot outtake” from the opera, opens the concert. Nixon in China established Adams as the most significant opera composer of the past 50 years. Composed while the Czech Antonín Dvořák was living in the U.S. the New World Symphony bursts with sweeping melodies, blending Bohemian soul with the spirit of America and incorporating the sounds and songs of both worlds into the iconic and oft-quoted work we know today.

Andris Nelsons leads this program featuring Tokyo-born rising star Mao Fujita as soloist in Mozart’s popular Piano Concerto No. 21, which he composed in 1785. Finland’s greatest composer, Jean Sibelius, infused his own music with Finnish musical and cultural traditions, even in his apparently abstract symphonies. Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen, a native of Lapland near the Arctic Circle, composes music influenced by the region’s distinctive landscape and culture. Her BSO co-commissioned Day Night Day employs two traditional Sámi melodies.

Mozart Piano Concerto No. 21 with Mao Fujita

Andris Nelsons shares the Symphony Hall podium with our two 2025 Tanglewood Conducting Fellows. for this geographically oriented program. The TMC Fellows lead two movements from Bedřich Smetana’s homage to his Czech homeland: conflict and history embodied in "Vyšehrad," a Prague fort overlooking the Moldau River; and a Bohemian cultural mosaic is depicted in the journey of the river itself. Nelsons conducts the First Symphony of Finland’s greatest composer, Jean Sibelius, who infused his work with Finnish musical and cultural traditions.

Superstar pianist Lang Lang joins Andris Nelsons and the BSO for the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg’s perennially popular Piano Concerto, which combines Romantic-era passion with elements of Norwegian traditional music. Similarly inspired by folk music, Antonín Dvořák was living in the U.S. when he composed the New World Symphony, which bursts with sweeping melodies blending Bohemian soul with the spirit of America and incorporates the sounds and songs of both worlds into the iconic and oft-quoted work we know today.

Grieg Piano Concerto with Lang Lang and Dvořák Symphony No. 9

Popular Dutch duo-pianists Lucas and Arthur Jussen return to Symphony Hall for a BSO-commissioned world premiere. This music was written especially for them by American composer Andrew Norman, winner of the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for his orchestral work Play. Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite brings the composer’s mastery of orchestral color to his fairy-tale suite, originally written for piano, four-hands. Closing the program is Sergei Rachmaninoff’s tour-de-force for orchestra, by turns powerfully energetic and meltingly lyrical: his Symphonic Dances, the composer’s final work.

This exciting and unusual three-concerto program features acclaimed soloist Evgeny Kissin, known for his charismatic virtuosity. These three sparkling but rarely heard concertos span the late Romantic/early modern periods. The BSO has only played Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s concerto once in 1914, and Scriabin’s on only two prior occasions, most recently in 2001. Andrey Boreyko leads this all-Russian program, opening with Rimsky-Korsakov’s brilliantly colorful Russian Easter Overture.

Returning for his second BSO program this season, Dima Slobodeniouk leads one of the American composer John Adams’ first major works, Harmonium for chorus and orchestra. Written in 1981 for the San Francisco Symphony, this grand, half-hour work sets a poem by John Donne and two by Emily Dickinson in gradually unfolding, majestic textures. With its slowly evolving harmonic fields and rhythmic energy, Harmonium marked the future Pulitzer Prize winner and composer of the operas Doctor Atomic and Nixon in China as an important and original voice in American music. Beethoven's larger-than-life, ecstatic Symphony No. 9 closes the season.

Andris Nelsons leads some of the most acclaimed stars of opera today in performances of Samuel Barber’s Vanessa, a work considered by many the greatest American opera. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1958, Vanessa premiered at the Metropolitan Opera that year. Barber wrote the opera on a libretto by Gian Carlo Menotti; they aimed for a cosmopolitan, nostalgic work on lost love and the consequences of self-delusion. Barber’s romantic lyricism is ever-present in this powerfully affecting work, a centerpiece of this season’s E Pluribus Unum: From Many, One focus.
